Ryo Sakazaki, Erbe des Kyokugenryu-Karate und derzeitiger Cheftrainer des Dojos, wurde von Kindheit an unter der strengen Anleitung seines Vaters Takuma Sakazaki geprägt. So wurde ihm Kyokugenryus Credo, einen Kampf mit einem einzigen, entscheidenden Schlag zu beenden, tief ins Herz gebrannt.

Seine Kampfkunst kennt keine Tricks. Ko'ou Ken bringt dies am deutlichsten zum Ausdruck: ein kontrollierter, dominanter Ausbruch gebündelter Kraft, der erst freigesetzt wird, wenn der Gegner sich bewegt hat – und ihn selbst dann noch besiegt. Um eine Pattsituation zu durchbrechen, senkt er seinen Körper und gleitet über den Boden.

Mit Hien Shippu Kyaku tauscht er Höhe gegen Geschwindigkeit, um blitzschnell vor seinem Gegner zu stehen. Versucht der Gegner, ihn aus der Luft zu überwältigen, antwortet Kohou mit einem aufgeladenen Aufwärtshieb. Nicht die Technik definiert diesen Angriff, sondern der instinktive Konter, der im Moment der Bedrängnis ausbricht. Und wenn Geist und Körper an ihre Grenzen stoßen, erscheint die ultimative Form des Ko'ou Ken: Haoh Shokoken.

Er bündelt seine gesamte Kraft zu einer gewaltigen Schockwelle, die alles vor ihm vernichtet. Doch dies sind nur seine konventionellen Waffen. Kyokugenryus geheime Kampfkunst, Ryuuko Ranbu, ist sein wahrer Trumpf. Einmal entfesselt, verwandeln sich Fäuste, Füße, Ellbogen und Knie in einen unaufhaltsamen Angriffsrausch, der jede Verteidigung über Bord wirft und nur unerbittlichen Vorwärtsdrang hinterlässt. So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.
