Der Shunt wird für Strommessgeräte mit analogen oder digitalen Anzeigeinstrumenten benötigt, denn diese werden in der Regel über eine Messung, einer sehr kleinen Spannung an einem Shunt realisiert. Im Fall der Victron Shunts 1000A – 6000A sind es 50mV.
Dabei gilt: umso kleiner die Messspannung an den Shunts ist desto geringer sind die Auswirkungen auf den restlichen Stromkreis des Systems.
Mit 50mV liefert dieser einen exzellenten Wert. Der Shunt wird dazu in die Leitung mit dem zu messenden Strom eingebaut.

Die an diesem Widerstand abfallende kleine Spannung wird mit einem Messgerät wie dem, Victron Batteriemonitor BMV 700 ausgewertet und Werte wie der aktuelle Stromfluss daraus abgeleitet und angezeigt.
