Known for their striking uniforms inspired by Hungarian and Turkish cavalry, the fourteen regiments of French Hussars were among the most visually impressive troops of the Napoleonic Wars.
Mounted on small but resilient horses, these light cavalrymen specialized in reconnaissance, raiding, and fast-moving attacks. Their battlefield presence was defined by their aggressive style, using their curved sabres with great effect in skirmishes and charges. Many also carried pistols or carbines for added versatility. The first company of each regiment was an elite formation, marked by their bearskin colpacks, further distinguishing them from the already eye-catching Hussar regiments.
