宇宙 (Uchu) – The Best of Fishmans is one half of the band’s acclaimed twin compilation releases, originally issued in 2005 alongside Kuchu (Aerial). Curated by drummer Kin-ichi Motegi, these collections were designed to span Fishmans’ catalog across multiple labels, creating a definitive overview of their evolution and sound.
While Kuchu focuses on groove-driven and accessible material, Uchu (“Universe”) highlights the band’s more expansive, atmospheric, and psychedelic side. Drawing heavily from their later-era output, including material associated with albums like Uchū Nippon Setagaya, this compilation emphasizes the dreamy, dub-influenced sound that has made Fishmans a cult favorite worldwide.
This 2LP vinyl edition (2024) marks the first time Uchu has been pressed on vinyl, released as part of the band’s 30th anniversary reissue campaign. Pressed on colored vinyl (commonly clear orange variants) and housed in a gatefold sleeve with inserts, the release has been highly anticipated among collectors.
Featuring essential tracks such as “Night Cruising,” “Walking in the Rhythm,” and “Magic Love,” Uchu offers a cohesive, immersive listening experience that captures the band’s signature blend of dub, dream pop, neo-psychedelia, and ambient pop.
