Dermovate Description
Dermovate is a topical corticosteroid used to treat inflammation from lichen planus.
It reduces inflammation and calms the immune response causing the issue, helping to ease your symptoms.
You'll need a prescription and a doctor's supervision, as it may lead to side effects such as thinning of the skin.

What is Dermovate?

Dermovate is a strong topical corticosteroid containing clobetasol propionate. It's one of the most powerful types of topical steroids and can ease symptoms from various skin conditions. For lichen planus, it helps to lessen swelling, irritation, itching, and redness.

Lichen planus is a skin condition that leads to itchy, reddish-purple, raised, flat bumps on the body. Applying topical treatments such as corticosteroids can help control these symptoms, but the condition often resolves on its own within nine to eighteen months.

How does Dermovate work?

When your skin gets inflamed due to an allergic reaction, certain chemicals cause your blood vessels to widen, leading to irritation, redness, itching, and swelling. Topical corticosteroids, such as Dermovate (clobetasol), are effective in reducing inflammation as they block the production of cytokines, small proteins in your immune cells that contribute to the reaction. These medications are used for their ability to reduce inflammation and itching, and they can also help narrow blood vessels to alleviate swelling.

Which Dermovate is right for me?

If lichen planus is impacting your scalp, you'll be given a scalp application to apply directly to the problem area. The cream works well on skin that is moist or weeping, while the ointment is thicker and greasier, making it more suitable for dry or flaky skin. After your clinician has assessed your skin, they will advise you on which option is best for you.

What are the ingredients in Dermovate?

The main active ingredient in Dermovate is clobetasol propionate. Each gram of the ointment contains 0.5 mg of clobetasol propionate, which is the same as 0.05% w/w. The other ingredients in the ointment include propylene glycol, sorbitan sesquioleate, and white soft paraffin. In the Dermovate cream, the inactive ingredients are cetostearyl alcohol, arlacel 165, propylene glycol, glyceryl monostearate 40-55, beeswax substitute 6621, sodium citrate, citric acid, chlorocresol, and purified water.

How long does Dermovate take to work?

In most instances, lichen planus tends to resolve on its own within nine to eighteen months. Applying a topical corticosteroid can help it heal more quickly. Generally, once it has cleared, the rash is unlikely to come back. It's important to follow your clinician's advice. Dermovate contains clobetasol, which can begin to take effect within a few days, but it shouldn't be used for longer than four weeks.

What happens if I make a mistake using Dermovate?

If you use too much or accidentally swallow it, get medical help straight away. If you forget to apply Dermovate, put it on as soon as you remember. However, if it's nearly time for your next application, just wait until then. Be sure to follow your clinician's instructions exactly, as stopping suddenly can worsen your rash.

What are the other alternatives to Dermovate?

Eumovate is somewhat like Dermovate but contains a slightly different active ingredient, clobetasone butyrate, which is a milder version. Another option for topical treatment is Betnovate, which contains the corticosteroid betamethasone valerate. Both are effective in treating the rash symptoms of lichen planus.

Another choice is Chlorpheniramine, an antihistamine usually used to treat and ease allergy symptoms, and it can also be used for lichen planus. It's a tablet taken by mouth once a day.

If you have a severe case of lichen planus, you might be offered immune suppressant medication, light therapy (phototherapy), or retinoids. However, your clinician will make sure you've tried the safest and most effective treatments before considering other options.

Can I use Dermovate on my face?

Only use Dermovate on your face if your doctor advises it. Limit its use to five days, as using topical corticosteroids on the face too much can lead to skin thinning.

Will I get side effects from Dermovate?

As with all medications, Dermovate may cause side effects, though not everyone experiences them. Some common side effects include a burning sensation or irritation at the application site of the ointment or cream. Using topical corticosteroids regularly can lead to skin thinning, making the blood vessels beneath your skin more noticeable.

How effective is Dermovate?

Several studies have examined how effective the active ingredient clobetasol propionate is. In one study, it was compared to coconut cream for treating oral lichen planus. After two months, clobetasol reduced visible symptoms by 95%, while coconut cream reduced them by 85%.

Another placebo-controlled study found that 87.5% of patients using clobetasol saw an improvement in their condition, compared to just 62.5% of those using a placebo.

These studies indicate that while lichen planus usually gets better on its own over time, using Dermovate can certainly help speed up the improvement of your symptoms.

Do I need a prescription for Dermovate?

Yes, you'll need a prescription for Dermovate. A clinician will need to assess how severe your symptoms are before they can prescribe the ointment or cream.

One of the best Bat stories that I've read.
Format: Paperback
Coming off from The Long Halloween, Jeff Loeb and Tim Sale give us the sequel to their popular story tale in which we see Batman go at it with another year long mystery, while also giving us an origin story for the first Robin, Dick Grayson. After reading this book, I have come away having with even more love of the Dark Knight's mythology, while coming to see this as my favorite Batman story that I have read, even if it doesn't stand as well on its own. ON the narrative side of things, Loeb delivers a story fairly similar to the one he gave in The Long Halloween, though I feel this one is a bit more polished than Halloween was. Some have said that the retreading of plot structure have limited the way Loeb's later works are read, but I myself have no problem with it (for the most part), Loeb manages to do enough differently that you don't feel like you're reading the exact same story. The real big negative I'd have to give this graphic novel is that it really doesn't stand as well by itself than if you had read The Long Halloween. While I myself read that story before coming in to this one, I did see many connections that I would assume would through off any newcomers who hadn't read the prior story. But I will say that this is the story that had me invested the most emotionally. Without giving away any spoilers, that last page in the novel gave me such a cathartic experience that I really came to appreciate certain aspects of the Dark Knight's mythology, and how themes of loneliness were touched upon in a very genuine way. Looking at the art for the novel, Sale's work has improved much from The Long Halloween. I always mention in reviews concerning Sale that I was originally not a fan of his art, but after going through his work, you can't help but admire the level skill he manages to put in his drawings. There is a very big noir feeling in this novel (a plus for ) that is just delivered so well that any preferences in art I may have against Sale are put away in admiring the way he plays with lighting in the story. My biggest complaint for the art, which is a more of a personal thing really, is that I do not like the "pixie" costume they gave Robin (which is his default costume that many would associate him with). I have never really liked this costume, probably never will, but again, this is just me. Overall, I would say I really enjoyed the novel and would have to recommend it to any fans of the Batman (although I'd make sure you have read The Long Halloween first). This has come to be one of my most favorited Batman stories I've read, and I hope others will receive the same level of satisfaction that I have.

Great Sequel to Long Halloween
Format: Paperback
This takes all of the great elements of the Long Halloween and keeps it going. The two of those books together is a great story telling. Ticks all the boxes of a great Batman book. If you like this and Long Halloween check out The Penguin show on HBO Max. and if you like The Penguin but haven't read these two books you should since the show pulls a lot of influence from them.
