Soul Survivors gives voice to women and children in Cambodia who survived the genocide (1975 - 1979), when nearly two million people died from execution, starvation, or disease. Through their detailed personal stories, fourteen people reveal the brutality of Pol Pot's regime, how they managed to survive, and what it took to rebuild their lives afterward. Although the survivors lives are fraught with suffering and times of despair, there is an under current of hope, courage, and resilience that comforts and inspires. Their stories are a testimony to the strength and goodness of the human spirit. Twelve of the fourteen survivors who tell their stories in Soul Survivors stayed in Cambodia after the genocide and worked against the odds to bring their family fragments back together and reclaim their culture. The fascinating details about life and traditions in Cambodia are revealed through their tales as the survivors come from a wide variety of backgrounds, including a medical doctor, classical dancer, landmine survivor, Buddhist nun, Muslim fisherwoman, Christian farmer, orphan, high school teacher, prostitute, silk weaver, social worker, and women's leader. Two survivors came to the United States of America as orphans, graduated from college, and returned to Cambodia as young adults to help rebuild their country. Sixty-four captivating photographs draw the reader into contemporary Cambodia to witness the survivors' courageous work to recover from three decades of war, genocide and poverty. Soul Survivors creates a comprehensive picture of Cambodia yesterday and today. In addition to the survivors stories, there are chapters on how the Khmer Rouge came to power, the role of the US, the landmine situation, the Buddhist peace movement, and how to help people in Cambodia. It includes a chronology of Cambodian history, a map of Cambodia, and an index. This second edition of Soul Survivors was published as Cambodia's genocide trial began in 2008. The perpetrators, top leaders of the Khmer Rouge regime, are being held accountable for mass murder and crimes against humanity 30 years after the tragedy. This new edition is updated and contains recent historical events and an epilog telling what happened to the survivors since the first edition was published in 2002. It also includes information about the two charitable humanitarian organizations the author and photographer were inspired to create to help the poor in Cambodia. "The book effectively demonstrates the political, economic, and psychological links between the destruction of Cambodian society carried out in the 1970s and the suffering experienced by so many Cambodians today," stated Susan Cook, Director of the Cambodian Genocide Program at Yale University. "These are stories that have to be told, that have to be held up to the light of humanity. For the sorrows of Cambodia have not ended. They have been repeated in greater or lesser forms in Rwanda and Bosnia, in Colombia, and continue even now in our history. Hatred never ceases by hatred but by love alone is healed," stated Jack Kornfield, a Buddhist teacher who worked in the Cambodian refugee camps.Binding Type: Paperback

Have bought a few of these over the last handful of years
Color: Red
Best toy outside of Ghonuts for heavy chewers. Even outlasts the most durable Kongs. I'd say we get about four months before our dog starts really making a dent in it and the size of the pieces he pulls off start to become larger and I should probably replace it after about six months. It's cheap enough that replacing it that often is fine.
*Important note* using squishy toys for heavy chewers is really important. They can break their teeth on hard toys like Nyla bones and things like antlers can break and cut them and damage their digestive system if they swallow the shards. It sucks because my dog loved Nyla bones and would chew off an inch a day, but I couldn't risk his teeth like that.

Finally - a tug toy my dog hasn’t destroyed!
Color: Red
This completely exceeded my expectations! My dog is roughly a year old, about 110-115lbs and a TOUGH chewer. He loved tugs toys but none of them last more than 10 minutes with him. I decided to try this because of the other reviews and price but wasn’t expecting it to last long. He’s had it almost a week and it’s still completely intact. It’s definitely heavy so it might not be best for smaller dogs but if you have a big dog/heavy chewer definitely give this a shot!

Indestructible so far
Color: Red, Color: Red
My toy destroyer has had this for almost two months now and it hasn’t taken any damage. It is big and heavy and solid. It became one of his favorites immediately and goes in and out of the house and even to bed with him.
Now if only we could find a stuffy that he can’t destroy.

MY DOG'S AREN'T INTERESTED ...
Color: Red
This is a large, heavy, hard rubber toy, so is of high quality. However, it is SO heavy that neither my 60-lb. female Boxer nor my 80-lb. male Bully will 'play' with it at all. They don't even chew on it. So, although it would probably be pretty indestructible, I have no way to verify that, since neither of my dogs show any interest at all. I've tried encouraging them, by holding on one end of it and encouraging them to grab the other end, but even that didn't work. Perhaps a much larger 'giant' breed dog would enjoy it.
