In 1938, Hugh W. Denny was born into a log house without electricity. Eighty years later, he wrote his memoir on a laptop. Crossing McDaniel Branch is a memoir celebrating his and his family lives, but also shows how rural nineteenth century America made possible the technological wonders of the twenty-first.

As a child, Denny dusted tobacco crops with arsenate of lead, hulled walnuts for money, and walked to school through sleet and floods. His vivid details capture the rhythms of rural life. He attended Tennessee Polytechnic Institute for electrical engineering and worked his entire career at Georgia Tech Research Institute. He had papers published in technical journals and at symposiums, did research for NASA, and attended conferences in India.

With colorful family stories of an uncle running moonshine, the activities of great-grandparents during the Civil War, and the poems of his grandmother, Crossing McDaniel Branch is a warm and personal look at the past.

About the Authors

Growing up, Hugh W. Denny farmed tobacco and corn with mules, milked cows and slaughtered pigs, and spent most of his education in a one-teacher schoolhouse. In high school he was active in interscholastic debate and finished at the top of his class. He earned an MS in electrical engineering at Georgia Tech. After four years of Army ROTC, he graduated with highest distinction and served as a second lieutenant during the Berlin Wall and Cuban Missile Crisis.

During his 35 years at the Georgia Tech Research Institution, Denny helped improve the reliability of the Department of Defense and NASA. He was active in the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and was twice elected to the Board of Directors of Electromagnetic Compatibility Society, served as the Secretary of EMCS’ Standards Committee, and served as Treasurer and Chair of the EMCS’ International Symposia. He has written one technical book, authored 35 refereed papers, and was the principal author or major contributor to 57 reports. He also has four patents.

Denny is married to Marguerite Ann Leahey. They have two daughters and three grandsons. Denny wrote Crossing McDaniel Branch for his grandsons. Now retired, he enjoys his daughters, dotes on his grandsons, and grows azaleas, rhododendrons, and camellias.

Will help you to understand God's love and grace and the work of the holy spirit
Format: Hardcover, Format: Hardcover
This is a really great study bible especially if you are looking for a first time study bible it has lots of pages and is kind of heavy I used to be KJV only but have come to love the NKJV because its almost exactly like the KJV except it takes out the way they talked when KJV was releasedit doesnt include thee thou and words like sayeth instead has a lot of word you and better to understand. It is filled with God's love and grace and will help you to understand God's love and grace and also to study the bible. I got out of living a fear based relationship with God and living by works and having religious perfectionism this study bible has helped to reinforce the work of God's love and will help you if you read the bible and feel condemned or are struggling to understand. It's got great notes a big section rather than few which i didnt like that many study bibles dont have enough notes this has extra parts to help you to understand and also included prayers and has a good outline of yhe original text that is very well to read rather than making you feel overwhelmed. If you are looking for your first time study bible or are considering buying this I would reccomend it, don't be thrown off by the title of the study bible. Godbless.

I can't put this bible down!
What a perfect size. The font is totally readable and enhances the experience (way to go 2K/Denmark). The layout is an invitation to read: simple bible text with little to no distractions. References on the sides of the page are a great idea. All the references you might desire are there but they're out of the way - they don't interfere with your ability to pay attention to the bible text. The slightly cream toned white paper is sublime: wonderfully opaque and easy to page turn. The line matched text solves ghosting issues you've doubtlessly hated in previous bibles. I LOVE the red text (not words of Christ in red, this is a black letter edition) - it is the perfect artistic accent and it's functional as well. The red under gold art gilt page edging is so beautiful. It's a joy to open this bible up to see that red tone appear - a red tone matched to the red text (wow!). And even the three double sided silk ribbons (two black, one red) match the overall design of the bible. The goatskin is ... amazing ... this is my first goatskin bible and I'll not go back to any other type of leather again. It is nicely floppy on the first day. The bible feels like it is fully broken in on the first day you open it. The leather has a nice (naturally) pebbly texture but also feels somewhat smooth and is edge sewn for years of use. The edge gilt on the inside of the cover is beautifully done and perfectly frames the text block when the bible lies open - which it does flawlessly. The spine of the bible lacks raised dividers instead having printed dividers. They do the job nicely and the dual thin gold lines at each location is a very nice artistic touch adding to the overall presentation of the finished product. Simple text on the spine tastefully complete the overall design: HOLY BIBLE ... New King James Version ... Thomas Nelson. Nothing else is needed. Things that are somewhat unimportant to me but should be mentioned in case these matter to you: the bible maps are nicely done and the sizable concordance is impressive (albeit the font is a bit small). Note I'm in my 60's now and I've noticed many of my old bibles (old, dear friends) seem to have shrinking text recently. Ah, 60's ... oh joy. That is what drove me to seek out bibles with the 2K/Denmark fonts. This has been such a delightful surprise. The bible is a complete invitation to read. I read it daily and wish I had more time to devote to it. This is, to date, the best bible I've ever owned at any price point. I gladly give this bible my highest recommendation.
