The Blackmagic Design SmartScope Duo - Main PCB is the primary motherboard and signal processing hub for the HD-SDI version of the SmartScope Duo. While it looks visually similar to the 4K version, this PCB is specifically optimized for SD, HD, and 3G-SDI workflows. It manages the simultaneous display of video and real-time broadcast scopes on two independent 8-inch screens.

Dual-Channel Scope Processing

The core function of this PCB is its ability to perform high-speed mathematical analysis on incoming SDI data to generate professional waveforms. Unlike a standard monitor, this board's FPGA is dedicated to rendering:

  • Seven Monitoring Modes: Waveform, Vectorscope, RGB Parade, YUV Parade, Histogram, Audio Phase, and Level meters.

  • Independent Operation: You can configure the left panel to show a Waveform while the right panel shows a Vectorscope, or have one side show the live video feed while the other displays the RGB Parade.

Physical Connections and I/O

The Main PCB integrates all the rear-facing ports. If your unit has lost connectivity or suffered physical damage to the connectors, this board is the required replacement.

  • 2 x 3G-SDI Inputs: Supports SD, HD, and 2K video standards.

  • 2 x 3G-SDI Loop Outputs: Re-clocked outputs that allow you to pass the clean signal through to other devices in your rack.

  • Ethernet Port: Since the unit has no front-panel buttons, this port is vital for changing scope views and adjusting image settings via the SmartView Setup software.

  • Tally Interface: A 9-pin D-sub connector that allows the monitors to display red, green, or blue tally borders when triggered by a switcher.

System Control and Networking

The Main PCB acts as a network node. It stores the unit's IP address and manages the "handshake" with your control computer. This allows multiple SmartScope Duo units to be managed from a single central workstation, ensuring that color and brightness across an entire wall of monitors remain consistent.

Key Features

  • Genuine Manufacturer Part: Specifically for the SmartScope Duo (HD/3G model).

  • Real-Time Rendering: Zero-latency waveform and vector generation.

  • SDI Re-clocking: Ensures that the looped-through signal is cleaned of jitter before being passed downstream.

  • Standard 3RU Fit: Designed to mount perfectly within the SmartScope Duo's shallow-depth rackmount chassis.

Technical Installation Note

Replacing the Main PCB is a straightforward mechanical process but requires attention to detail:

  • Dual Display Ribbons: You must connect two sets of delicate ribbon cables. Ensure the locking tabs on the ZIF connectors are fully engaged to prevent "sparkle" or signal dropouts on the LCDs.

  • Grounding: Ensure all screws connecting the PCB to the chassis standoffs are tight, as the chassis acts as a common ground for the SDI signals.

  • Software Sync: Upon first boot, the new board will likely have factory default settings. You will need to connect via USB or Ethernet to the Blackmagic SmartView Setup utility to assign it an IP address and select your desired scope views.

  • ESD Protection: As with all precision broadcast electronics, handle the board by the edges and use a grounded wrist strap to prevent static damage to the sensitive FPGA and SDI chips.

Excellent Tool For Drilling Shelf Pin Holes
I had a project where I was extending the depth of the bottom half of a bookcase I had made out of pre-drilled MDF from Home Depot. The original bookcase was 11" deep x 10' high. The extended depth of the bottom is to be used to hold audio gear and needed to be 18" depth, front to rear. I was able to increase the depth but had to insert additional panels on the left and right so that shelf pins could be installed. I needed a shelf pin jig to do that, and this jig was perfect for the job. After completing my holes and mounting some shelves I was pleased that the alignment with the inner portion of the shelf was perfect and the distance between holes lined up exactly as with the original panels from Home Depot. The jig is high quality fabricated aluminum, not plastic, and it comes with two drill bits, and stop and Allen wrench, including an instruction manual, all in an attractive plastic case. The jig is well worth the modest price and I would definitely recommend it for drilling shelf clip holes.

a solid choice
I realized I don't need to drill 5mm holes, so this item is just perfect. It's higher quality than those other cheap-chinese noname jigs. In particular: * The stop collar provided actually fits the drill bit. I had one from Tanyo that had too-big collars that didn't stay put. * The fence pins are very soilid, so the jig doesn't move while in place. Other brands have a long knurled screw that wobbles and allows the kiig to move around. * The plate is thick, making it feel sturdy. * It's phyically smaller than the others, because it doesn't have any useless features like euro-hinge hole guides. The case is more compact and stores well. Overall, very satisfied with this jig.

very nice tool
likes, all aluminum construction, seems very accurate and uses more sturdy 1/4 inch shelf pins instead of the 5mm ones comes with 2 bits which is a huge plus the competition makes you buy the 1/4 drill and only is set up for 5mm to start. this jig will work along side, for now, my other jig dislike is the fact it only has 1/4 pin capability not a deal killer in any way, and it has "pins" to support the jig on the edge again this is both an advantage and disadvantage as you can change the depth of where the pins are located BUT if you are making something smaller the jig may not calibrate consistently. on another positive you can replace the bits easily and commonly as they are not proprietary and simply standard 1/4 inch bits this will be a fine addition to my other goingmake tools and future ones
