Atypical Minds is a unique collection of two elements that are rarely combined. It features academic findings on mental atypicality in fin-de-sicle Gothic short fiction, as well as six original short stories by author Simon Schothans. Informed by nearly two years of academic research, these short stories illustrate, adapt, and criticise fin-de-sicle traditions, engaging with topics such as pseudoscience, stereotypes, and even the occult.

Feel the air around you grow cold as this collection peruses such tales as the eerie 'The Yellow Wall-Paper', and exposes the frightening writings of Ambrose Bierce, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and many others. Then, when your nightlight starts to flicker, try not to shudder as you are thrown into the abyss of the distinctively tragic Gothic tales produced by Simon Schothans' uniquely atypical mind.

Simon Schothans was born in Zwolle, The Netherlands, in July 2001. He attended the Radboud University of Nijmegen, where he pursued a Bachelor in English Language & Culture. As part of the minor abroad programme, Simon attended the University of Hull, where he followed courses on creative writing and the Gothic. Having written his Bachelor thesis on animated flora as an EcoGothic transgression of the colonial-colonialist dichotomy between 1880 and 1920, Simon graduated in the Summer of 2023. During the last two years of his Bachelor, however, he additionally partook in the Honours Programme for Humanities, wherein he researched mental atypicality in fin-de-sicle Gothic short fiction. This collection is a pro-duct of the latter research. Simon is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Literary Studies at the University of Groningen.

Really good read, and leaves questions
Format: Paperback
Nice to see the Ben Solo story flushed out more than what was shown in The Last Jedi and The Rise Of Skywalker. A good job also of not explaining everything. Ben mentions something about what Skywalker did to Snoke, and then there's the Emperor himself speaking to Ben in his mind, which makes one wonder, if even the Emperor was his own voice in Ben's head, why didn't Kylo recognize him in The Rise Of Skywalker. Plenty of things left to really expand upon this very good story.

Excellent Story
Format: Paperback
Charles Soule is without a doubt one of the greatest Star Wars authors around. With this comic he keeps the reader on their toes making it hard to set the book down. It is a definite page turner and easily one of the best comics Marvel has out out under the Star Wars name. An intriguing story, unforgettable moments, and packed with lore, Star Wars fans are sure to love The Rise of Kylo Ren.

Ben Solo’s fall is tragic
Format: Paperback
We don’t know much about Ben Solo’s past, but this comic explains a little bit more about why he is the way he is. It also explains that he didn’t do all the things he himself implies in TLJ. It’s a story of a young man who is lost because those he is supposed to trust betray him, which is exactly what Snoke/Palpatine want. It shows he didn’t really have a choice in the path he took and it makes his redemption at the end of the saga powerful, even if the last movie itself destroys the myth of Star Wars. I love knowing that Rey and Ben have always had a connection and I hope that is something explored more deeply in Episode X when they bring Ben back.
