In 1801 the population of London was almost one million. A century later it was 6m. Stephen Halliday's beautifully illustrated book shows how the ramshackle collection of communities that entered the 19th century became the world’s first metropolis.

This amazing story is told through the lives of eight men: JOHN NASH defined the modern West End with his ‘New Street’ (Regent Street). MARC BRUNEL invented the tunnelling shield that made the underground railways possible.

THOMAS CUBITT built houses for aristocrats in Belgravia and homes for the middle classes at Pimlico and Bloomsbury. SIR CHARLES BARRY built the New Palace of Westminster to replace the charred ruins of the old one.

SIR JOSEPH PAXTON designed the Crystal Palace for the Great Exhibition of 1851, the profits of which enabled ALFRED WATERHOUSE to build the Natural History Museum and thus begin the South Kensington museums.

SIR JOSEPH BAZALGETTE built the sewers, streets and parks that made the metropolis a safe place to live, and SIR EDWARD WATKIN, chairman of the Metropolitan Railway, began the process that created the suburbs of Metroland and elsewhere.

Great staple slip dress
This dress is more on the expensive side for a slip but it is SO cute and flattering. The low cut back is stunning and the material is soft and has some give to it. Super simple and sexy.

Loved them so much- Bought another pair
To start off, I have wide feet, ankles, and calves, because i'm a bit on the heavier side. Finding shoes that fit these requirements are difficult. The top part of the shoes that hug my legs are actually still a little roomy. Someone who has slightly larger lower legs can fit into these as well. If you have tiny legs, these shoes may be a little too loose, or if you don't have wide feet. These shoes are literally perfect for my feet and legs. The back unzips so I was able to get my feet into the shoes easily, and even wearing them I didn't feel like my toes were being squished. I ordered a size 10, and it is perfect length and width for my wide feet. Do note: My feet are wide enough to not fit in most shoes, but not too wide, you should pay attention to the measurements if you have wide feet. I was a little skeptical from a review of a woman who had her toes bleeding from these shoes, as I know that is often a problem for me with most shoes I wear. Generally I start bleeding in the back of my heel. So I was skeptical that these shoes would make me bleed. However, I was proven wrong. These are one of the only shoes i've worn that haven't rubbed my skin right off. I believe that has to do with the lovely height of the back, which prevents rubbing on the back of your heels, and the perfect width of the shoes. If your feet are too wide for these shoes, then you will probably bleed, but that's to be expected because the shoe does not fit you and that is often something that can happen with shoes that don't fit. I originally bought the green pair, because I loved the color, but then I loved the fit so much that I bought a second, black pair. These are one of the only shoes with heels I actually wear because they are more comfortable than most, and they're just adorable. I am not generally a high heel wearer, so I'm not used to walking with my heels elevated. Despite that, these shoes were fairly easy to walk in. They are my favorite pairs of heels. and I do highly recommend them. I will be buying more colors in the future, and I hope they will come out with more colors like brown and an aqua/blue shade.
