The Bowie knife holds a near-mythical place in American frontier history, traced back to the early 1800s and forever tied to the legendary name of Jim Bowie. What began as a large fighting and utility blade quickly became the defining symbol of the American outdoorsman, equally at home skinning game, clearing camp, or settling a hard day's work in the wild. Its bold clip point and commanding presence turned it into a tool that earned respect long before it earned legend.

Over the generations, the Bowie evolved from a pure survival blade into one of the most collected and celebrated knife designs in the world. Smiths began pairing the classic clip point silhouette with Damascus steel a forging tradition rooted in centuries-old pattern-welding to create blades that were as beautiful as they were brutal. This piece carries that lineage forward, blending old-world hand-forging with the timeless Bowie form that shaped a nation's history.

Introduction

This handmade Damascus Bowie knife is built for the person who wants a blade with genuine character — not a factory-stamped copy. Forged by hand from layered high-carbon Damascus steel, it features an 8-inch clip point blade with a flowing pattern that runs through every layer of the steel. The 5-inch stacked leather handle and warm brass fittings give it a classic, broken-in look that only improves with age and use.

It belongs to our Damascus Bowie Knives collection, where each blade is shaped, ground, and finished individually so no two are exactly alike. Whether you're a hunter who needs a dependable field companion or a collector chasing a true heirloom piece, this Bowie delivers performance and presence in equal measure. It arrives ready to work and ready to display.

Blade

The heart of this knife is its 8-inch hand-forged Damascus steel blade, built around a traditional clip point profile that brings the tip low and sharp for precise, controlled cutting. The pattern-welded layers aren't surface decoration they're a structural result of folding and forging the billet, giving the blade excellent edge retention, toughness, and resistance to chipping. Hardened in the 55–58 HRC range, it holds a keen working edge through real outdoor tasks.

Handle

The 5-inch handle is crafted from genuine stacked leather individual leather washers compressed and shaped into a comfortable, grippy grip that has anchored classic field knives for over a century. Brass clip and spacer accents frame the leather beautifully while adding balance and durability. The result is a handle that feels warm and secure in hand, wet or dry, and develops a rich patina with use.

Leather Sheath

Every blade ships with a hand-stitched genuine leather sheath, custom-fitted to this Bowie's blade profile for a secure, snug carry. The leather protects the Damascus edge from moisture and knocks while keeping the knife ready at your side. Built to last as long as the blade itself, it's both practical field gear and a fitting home for a handmade piece.

Uses

This Bowie is a true do-it-all field and camp blade. Use it for hunting and field dressing, skinning game, batoning and splitting kindling, clearing brush, and general camp and bushcraft work. Its size and balance also make it a striking display and collector's piece, and a memorable gift for hunters, outdoorsmen, and knife enthusiasts. If you prefer a different handle look, the Sheffield Damascus Clip Point Bowie offers a similar blade in a brass-guard, bone-handle build.

Care Instructions

Hand-wash and dry the blade immediately after every use  never put a Damascus knife in the dishwasher. Apply a light coat of food-safe mineral oil or blade oil every few weeks to protect the steel from moisture and rust. Store the knife in its leather sheath away from humidity, and treat the leather occasionally with a leather conditioner. Sharpen on a whetstone or honing rod as needed. With proper care, this Bowie will last for generations.

FAQs

What blade length and handle size does this Damascus Bowie knife have?

This Bowie features an 8-inch hand-forged Damascus clip point blade paired with a 5-inch stacked leather handle, giving it an overall length of about 13 inches. The proportions deliver classic Bowie presence with a balance suited to real field and camp work.

Is the stacked leather handle durable enough for heavy outdoor field use?

Yes. Stacked leather has anchored working field knives for over a century because it's tough, shock-absorbing, and grippy in wet or dry conditions. The brass fittings add strength, and with occasional conditioning the handle develops a rich patina while holding up to hard use.

Does this handmade Damascus Bowie knife come with a genuine leather sheath?

Yes. Every knife ships with a hand-stitched genuine leather sheath custom-fitted to this blade's profile. It protects the Damascus edge from moisture and impact while keeping the knife secure and ready to carry at your side in the field.

How should I clean and oil the Damascus blade to prevent rusting over time?

Hand-wash and dry the blade right after use, then apply a light coat of food-safe mineral oil every few weeks. Store it in the leather sheath away from humidity. Avoid dishwashers entirely, as harsh heat and moisture can damage the Damascus pattern and steel.

Is this Damascus Bowie knife better suited for hunting or display use?

It's built to excel at both. The hardened Damascus edge handles hunting, skinning, and camp tasks reliably, while its flowing pattern and classic silhouette make it a standout collector's and display piece a genuine working blade that's beautiful enough to showcase.

Wobby? Fixable!
Color: Onyx Black, Color: Onyx Black
After a year and half of excellent performance, the platter became more and more wobbly but the readings were consistent. Finally, it was too wobbly and the readings were erratic. There was no obvious way to try to fix it and I couldn't find any help online. I wrote to Greater Goods customer service. While I was awaiting a reply I could barely see that there was a screw inside that appeared to connect to the back right behind the paper label. I pressed on the label, and it broke through to reveal...two screws! I tightened them both and my scale is back in action just like new! It's ready for years of upcoming service. If your unit starts to wobble, it's almost certainly fixable this way. Oh, and Urmila from customer service just reached out and I gave them the good news.

works great
Size: EK6002
i've had it for a couple of weeks now, and i will say, it works well. calibration isn't in the instructions, but, if you hit and hold all 4 buttons when you turn it on, after it says hello, it will enter cal mode. pressing unit advances to the next screen, which is the auto shut off time. if you turn off the power, or use all 4 buttons to reset it, it does not seem to save, so you will have to purchase calibration weights in order to change it. after setting the auto shutoff, it then lists the 3000 g, which is the max weight. it seems you can change it, but i haven't tried. the next shows random numbers, seemingly the raw value of the scale sensor, then it goes through asking for a 500g calibration weight, and after that, a 2000g calibration weight. the 1000g weight doesn't seem to be necessary. after calibration, the scale seems to do pretty well with the calibration weights. weighing in the center and in the corners seem to be repeatable, although it may be a little off at the very edges or corners. the mat that goes on top of the scale has a hangover on the left side, which helps keep it in place, but it can slide up and down. using the scale to measure liquid, it seems to refresh quick enough to easily allow you to gauge when to stop, although, it may depend on how quickly you pour. one thing to note, the precision mentioned in the description. this scale is accurate to 0.1g from 0-500g, 0.5g from 501-1000g, and 1g from 1001-3000g. this isn't over the weight range of the scale exactly, but rather over the displayed weight. meaning, if you decided to weigh pour over or something, in something heavy (or a collection of things), if you tare out the weight (zero it out to measure the difference), it will still display the first 500g up to 0.1g accuracy. that makes the 3000g limit of the scale much more useful. lastly, this is a rebranded scale...many make the same scale under a different brand. i can't remember which combination of buttons it was, but if you held 2 buttons at the same time, it would bring up a muted speaker (no sound) icon, even though this scale doesn't have sound to begin with. i'm very happy with this scale. the price was good, and realizing that the 0.1g accuracy works up to 500g after taring is great. i used it to measure the water and ice in my 64 oz yeti, to figure out how much water i was actually drinking (got very close to the limit of 3000g).

Good scale to use while making pour over coffee and other things
Size: EK6002
So there is one problem that I have found with this unit so far, but only one, it lags in accuracy slightly. I have used the Timemore black mirror for over a year now and I find this scale to be much nicer in everyway with the one exception. It doesn't instantly measure your pour, it needs a second or less after you stop pouring to give an accurate measurement. It's usually about a gram lag and I have gotten used to dealing with it however you should upgrade your sensor to give a faster reading. Now in every other way I prefer this scale to the Timemore which is almost 3 times the price of this scale. This scale is longer with a larger area to work on making it much more comfortable to do a pour over, also this scale has a solid flat surface where the controls are meaning you will not get water into the controls. I have had it happen more than a few times with the Timemore where if some water falls on the area of the timer or tare switch they stop working temporarily. While making a pour over it is a significant problem when that happens, I don't think I will ever have that problem with this unit because there is no area for the water to penetrate. I do wish the controls gave a beep when you activated and if they made the sensor respond more quickly those would be some nice improvements. However in all for the price of this little scale you can't go wrong, I have no idea how long it will hold up as I have used it for about a month. However if it continues on as it has I see it performing well for a long while, thanks for the great scale and even better price.

Excellent scale in all ways.
Size: EK6002
I’ve used this identical scale for four years, though with a different brand name on it, still identical, made in China with a friendly “Hello” on the splash screen when you turn it on. After approximately 1,000 uses in four years, it suddenly died one day, lost its mind and became obviously useless. When that happened there was no doubt in my mind that I wanted to replace it with exactly the same scale because I liked the old one so much. The controls are logically laid out, the display is bright, it automatically turns itself off after a few minutes if you forget about it. I’ve tested it with standard weights and it’s precisely accurate. It’s correctly sized for its task (a coffee scale), it’s slim, light, has a removable, washable rubber mat that covers the weighing platform, and is altogether a winner in design and utility, and there’s no reason to change anything about it. When this one fails, I’ll be happy enough to buy another. It costs twenty bucks . . .

Simple, does the trick.
Size: EK6002
It's a simple, basic scale. Lightweight, it's easy to move from where I stash it to where I use it for measuring coffee. The unit of measure holds it setting when you turn it off, which is nice. I use it in grams for coffee, which is 95% of my use. I acquired a big bag of coffee (5lbs or so) which I broke down into smaller vacuum-packed bags for storage, measured out at 180g each. The scale mostly performed like a champ, although it drifted off zero twice between during bags. Simply shutting restarting the scale got it back on track. It works for me, if you're a hardcore candy maker or baker, you may want a higher quality unit.
