Among the Norse, the bearded hatchet held a place of pride in nearly every warrior's and craftsman's hand. Compact and balanced, its extended lower edge gave it the versatility to chop, carve, and fight, while its size made it the everyday companion of Viking life. To carry a finely made hatchet was a mark of skill, status, and readiness.

The Vikings rarely left their finest axes plain. Smiths adorned them with runes, knotwork, and Norse symbols believed to carry protection and meaning, much like the silver-inlaid Mammen axe of 10th-century Denmark. This bearded hatchet revives that tradition, pairing an acid-etched rune head with a hand-carved handle a working-style piece steeped in the artistry and spirit of the old North.

Introduction

This Handmade Viking Bearded Hatchet brings Norse artistry into a compact, hand-friendly form. Its forged head carries acid-etched Viking runes and Norse detailing, paired with a 6–7 inch bearded cutting edge and an 18–20 inch wooden handle carved by hand for a truly one-of-a-kind look. The result is a bold, authentic-feeling Viking hatchet with rich old-world character.

It belongs to our hatchets collection, where every piece is shaped and finished by hand so no two are exactly alike. Built for collectors, Norse history enthusiasts, and outdoor lovers who appreciate bold craftsmanship, it works beautifully as a display centerpiece and a striking statement piece. For another rune-etched option, the Viking Rune Engraved Bearded Hatchet makes a fitting companion.

Axe Head

The head is forged in the classic bearded Viking profile, with a 6–7 inch cutting edge and the signature extended lower blade of the historic Skeggøx. Across the steel, hand-applied acid-etched Viking runes and Norse detailing bring an authentic, heritage-rich character to the piece. Shaped for bold visual impact and balanced feel, it captures the fierce beauty of a true Norse hatchet head.

Handle

The 18–20 inch wooden handle is carved and engraved by hand, echoing the Norse character of the head with intricate detailing along its length. Shaped for a secure, comfortable grip, it gives the hatchet a balanced, one-handed feel with real presence. The natural wood grain adds warmth and authenticity, and the carving makes every handle unique a handsome counterpoint to the etched steel above it.

Uses

This Viking bearded hatchet is both a striking collector's piece and a handsome functional-style tool. It shines as Norse-themed wall decor, a centerpiece for collection rooms, and a bold conversation starter, and suits cosplay, reenactment displays, photography, and themed props. It also makes a memorable gift for history lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. As a full hatchet, it should always be handled and stored responsibly.

Care Instructions

Carbon steel rewards simple, regular care. Wipe the head with a soft, dry cloth after handling and apply a light coat of mineral oil periodically to protect the etched steel from rust. Keep the edge covered with the leather mask when stored, and keep the hatchet in a dry place away from humidity. Treat the carved wooden handle occasionally with oil or wax to preserve the engraving, and always handle the piece responsibly.

What do the acid-etched Viking runes on this bearded hatchet head mean?

On this hatchet they're decorative, giving the head an authentic, heritage-rich character and making it a striking, conversation-worthy piece.

Is the handle on this Viking bearded hatchet hand-engraved or machine-cut?
The 18–20 inch wooden handle is carved and engraved by hand, which is why each one is unique. The hand detailing complements the etched head and gives the hatchet genuine artisan character, while the shaped grip keeps it secure and comfortable to hold.

Wobby? Fixable!
Color: Onyx Black, Color: Onyx Black
After a year and half of excellent performance, the platter became more and more wobbly but the readings were consistent. Finally, it was too wobbly and the readings were erratic. There was no obvious way to try to fix it and I couldn't find any help online. I wrote to Greater Goods customer service. While I was awaiting a reply I could barely see that there was a screw inside that appeared to connect to the back right behind the paper label. I pressed on the label, and it broke through to reveal...two screws! I tightened them both and my scale is back in action just like new! It's ready for years of upcoming service. If your unit starts to wobble, it's almost certainly fixable this way. Oh, and Urmila from customer service just reached out and I gave them the good news.

works great
Size: EK6002
i've had it for a couple of weeks now, and i will say, it works well. calibration isn't in the instructions, but, if you hit and hold all 4 buttons when you turn it on, after it says hello, it will enter cal mode. pressing unit advances to the next screen, which is the auto shut off time. if you turn off the power, or use all 4 buttons to reset it, it does not seem to save, so you will have to purchase calibration weights in order to change it. after setting the auto shutoff, it then lists the 3000 g, which is the max weight. it seems you can change it, but i haven't tried. the next shows random numbers, seemingly the raw value of the scale sensor, then it goes through asking for a 500g calibration weight, and after that, a 2000g calibration weight. the 1000g weight doesn't seem to be necessary. after calibration, the scale seems to do pretty well with the calibration weights. weighing in the center and in the corners seem to be repeatable, although it may be a little off at the very edges or corners. the mat that goes on top of the scale has a hangover on the left side, which helps keep it in place, but it can slide up and down. using the scale to measure liquid, it seems to refresh quick enough to easily allow you to gauge when to stop, although, it may depend on how quickly you pour. one thing to note, the precision mentioned in the description. this scale is accurate to 0.1g from 0-500g, 0.5g from 501-1000g, and 1g from 1001-3000g. this isn't over the weight range of the scale exactly, but rather over the displayed weight. meaning, if you decided to weigh pour over or something, in something heavy (or a collection of things), if you tare out the weight (zero it out to measure the difference), it will still display the first 500g up to 0.1g accuracy. that makes the 3000g limit of the scale much more useful. lastly, this is a rebranded scale...many make the same scale under a different brand. i can't remember which combination of buttons it was, but if you held 2 buttons at the same time, it would bring up a muted speaker (no sound) icon, even though this scale doesn't have sound to begin with. i'm very happy with this scale. the price was good, and realizing that the 0.1g accuracy works up to 500g after taring is great. i used it to measure the water and ice in my 64 oz yeti, to figure out how much water i was actually drinking (got very close to the limit of 3000g).

Good scale to use while making pour over coffee and other things
Size: EK6002
So there is one problem that I have found with this unit so far, but only one, it lags in accuracy slightly. I have used the Timemore black mirror for over a year now and I find this scale to be much nicer in everyway with the one exception. It doesn't instantly measure your pour, it needs a second or less after you stop pouring to give an accurate measurement. It's usually about a gram lag and I have gotten used to dealing with it however you should upgrade your sensor to give a faster reading. Now in every other way I prefer this scale to the Timemore which is almost 3 times the price of this scale. This scale is longer with a larger area to work on making it much more comfortable to do a pour over, also this scale has a solid flat surface where the controls are meaning you will not get water into the controls. I have had it happen more than a few times with the Timemore where if some water falls on the area of the timer or tare switch they stop working temporarily. While making a pour over it is a significant problem when that happens, I don't think I will ever have that problem with this unit because there is no area for the water to penetrate. I do wish the controls gave a beep when you activated and if they made the sensor respond more quickly those would be some nice improvements. However in all for the price of this little scale you can't go wrong, I have no idea how long it will hold up as I have used it for about a month. However if it continues on as it has I see it performing well for a long while, thanks for the great scale and even better price.

Excellent scale in all ways.
Size: EK6002
I’ve used this identical scale for four years, though with a different brand name on it, still identical, made in China with a friendly “Hello” on the splash screen when you turn it on. After approximately 1,000 uses in four years, it suddenly died one day, lost its mind and became obviously useless. When that happened there was no doubt in my mind that I wanted to replace it with exactly the same scale because I liked the old one so much. The controls are logically laid out, the display is bright, it automatically turns itself off after a few minutes if you forget about it. I’ve tested it with standard weights and it’s precisely accurate. It’s correctly sized for its task (a coffee scale), it’s slim, light, has a removable, washable rubber mat that covers the weighing platform, and is altogether a winner in design and utility, and there’s no reason to change anything about it. When this one fails, I’ll be happy enough to buy another. It costs twenty bucks . . .

Simple, does the trick.
Size: EK6002
It's a simple, basic scale. Lightweight, it's easy to move from where I stash it to where I use it for measuring coffee. The unit of measure holds it setting when you turn it off, which is nice. I use it in grams for coffee, which is 95% of my use. I acquired a big bag of coffee (5lbs or so) which I broke down into smaller vacuum-packed bags for storage, measured out at 180g each. The scale mostly performed like a champ, although it drifted off zero twice between during bags. Simply shutting restarting the scale got it back on track. It works for me, if you're a hardcore candy maker or baker, you may want a higher quality unit.
