An essential toolkit for understanding architecture as both art form and the setting for our everyday lives

We spend most of our days and nights in buildings, living and working and sometimes playing. Architecture is both the setting for our everyday lives and a public art form--but it remains mysterious to most of us.
In How Architecture Works, Witold Rybczynski, one of our best, most stylish critics and the winner of the Vincent Scully Prize for his writing on architecture, answers our most fundamental questions about how good--and not so good--buildings are designed and constructed. Introducing the reader to the rich and varied world of modern architecture, he reveals how architects as diverse as Frank Gehry, Renzo Piano, and Robert A. M. Stern envision and create their designs. He teaches us how to "read" plans, how buildings respond to their settings, and how the smallest detail--of a stair balustrade, for instance--can convey an architect's vision. How Architecture Works explains the central elements that make up good building design, ranging from a war memorial in London to an opera house in Saint Petersburg, from the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., to a famous architect's private retreat in Princeton, New Jersey. It is an enlightening humanist's toolkit for thinking about the built environment and seeing it afresh.
"Architecture, if it is any good, speaks to all of us," Rybczynski writes. This revelatory book is his grand tour of architecture today.

Good quality for an inexpensive salt/pepper grinder. Works fine and should last a reasonable time

Looks nice and seems to work well, but the black retaining ring randomly fell out.

The pepper grinder looks nice and initially functioned well as expected. However, as at least 9 other reviewers have noted experiencing, within 2 weeks of purchase and after very minimal usage, the black retaining ring around the grinder cone & adjustment knob just fell out when I was using the grinder, which was disappointing and indicative of poor design or construction for this part. After some research & experimentation, I was able to pop the ring back into place using needle-nose pliers (you just need something hard and narrow to push and flex the ring a bit, not necessarily pliers). I'm hoping that this is not a harbinger of other problems to come. Otherwise it's a nice grinder.

Not Overly Large and Easy to Use
Color: Silver1, Color: Silver1
I’ve been looking for a salt grinder for a long time. I was hoping to find something small—closer to the disposable grinders you see at the grocery store—but those don’t really seem to be available. So I decided to try this one, and overall I’m glad I did. I’ve included photos to give a better sense of the size compared to your store size non-refillable salt grinders, since it’s a bit larger than what I originally had in mind. The grinder works smoothly and doesn’t require much effort to use. You can easily adjust the grind size by turning the knob on the top of the grinder, which is a nice feature. Refilling it was also straightforward. I had no trouble pouring in coarse Himalayan salt from a larger container without making a mess.

Salt or pepper grinder.

Excellent product. I accidentally broke one of mine and was pleased that I was able to purchase one grinder. They’re beautiful and very well made. Grind salt and pepper easily and many different coarseness. And they are pretty.

Inexpensive but certainly not 'cheap'

These work well and feel like very good quality far in excess of what you might expect for the price. I am very happy with my purchase.
