Jeannie introduces some of the people, places, and events her parents encountered during beautiful, difficult, and sometimes turbulent times--the Great Depression and Desegregation issues. Jeannie integrates stories, poetry, and art into the storytelling format, providing the reader with a link to the past by exploring how her parents dealt with these difficult and sensitive situations and issues.
A lesson can be learned from their hard work, perseverance, and foresight in preparing their children for the future through education in a time when it was not the popular path.
About the Author
Gloria Gipson Suggs is a native of Marshall County, MS, where she continues to reside with her husband; she is the mother of two and grandmother of one, a grandson. Gloria is the eleventh child of seventeen, born to Sam Person and Versie Ree Gipson.
After attending one- and two-room elementary schools, she went on to receive a B.S. degree in Science from Rust College and a M.S. degree in Curriculum Development and Instruction from U of M in Memphis, TN. When her 28-year career as an educator was brought to a sudden halt after several accidents, she turned to things she loved as a childperforming, writing, and drawingand published two books, one in 1983 and one in 1998.
As a multi-talented artist, she uses the creation of her folk art, poetry, short stories, and songs to tell the stories passed on to her of African and Native American heritage and rituals.
