The piece of limestone matrix measures 88 mm (3.45 inches) tall and the fossil ammonite measures 20 mm (0.8 inches). The ammonite is very well preserved and has been prepared out of the rock to reveal the shell. The ribs are finely defined, and the mottled brown and yellow colour is beautiful and unusual for this species. the matrix has been shaped to give the fossil a sculptural form. the outer whorl/living chamber of the ammonite split when the rock was opened, revealing the intricate internal calcite crystals.
These calcite ammonites make great unique gifts for the nature lover in your life! A great example of the species and impressive in the flesh. The fossil weighs 76 grams and has a cut flat base to allow it to stand freely for display.
Around 196 million years old (Sinemurian, Early Jurassic), this fossil would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
