This title presents gripping story chronicling the history of the Wenlock Olympian Games, the pre-cursor to the modern Olympics. It includes a detailed Athletes Biographies section, listing every competitor that took part between 1850-95.

At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, London Mayor Boris Johnson memorably said of London 2012 that 'Ping-Pong is coming home'. In fact, he might justifiably have said that 'the modern Olympic movement is coming home'.

In 1850, Shropshire doctor William Penny Brookes began Olympian Games for the 'moral, physical and intellectual improvement' of the local population of Wenlock Borough.

Within a decade he had donated a prize for athletics in Athens and was urging the Greeks to revive their ancient Games. He had also begun agitating for physical education to be compulsory at primary schools in England.

Brookes, with help from John Hulley of Liverpool and Ernst Ravenstein of London, staged Britain's first National Olympian Games at the Crystal Palace in 1866. In this engaging account, Catherine Beale tells the story of the Wenlock Olympian Games.

Catherine Beale is a writer and historian living in Herefordshire. She has written for Garden History, Hortus, and Country Landowner. She regularly gives talks and tours and recently contributed to the BBC Antiques Roadshow.

Bringing history to life is a challenge that she enjoys. Her first book, Champagne and Shambles illustrated the changes in country house life in the second half of the 19th century. Bom out of Wenlock builds on her knowledge of this period and its issues.

Educated at Cheltenham Ladies' College and Cambridge University, her sporting success was entirely limited to school and college hockey.

Great Toy!
Color: Orange
This has been a great toy for our 11 week old German Shepherd. She absolutely loves it. I can get out all of her toys and lay them out with the exception of her "Lizzy" and she will immediately go to her toy bin and get it herself. Needless to say it is her favorite toy. She has had it a week now and she plays with it a lot, chewing and squeaking. It's a pretty amazing toy to have held up this long already and to date shows no sign of wear or damage. Lizzy just keeps going and going.

This item came with plush missingand thread unraveling on one leg
Color: Blue
I bought this toy because my dog spent a week playing with the same toy from Zanies that belonged to a visiting dog. My dog was very gentle with this toy, which he loved, so we decided to find one for him. The toy that arrived had no Zanies label and missing plush on the bottom where the label should have been, plus other bare spots in the area that showed the white mesh beneath. It also had a long thread at the joint of a rear leg so I knotted it at the joint and clipped it to prevent my dog from pulling at it but it's apparent that the sewing is loose and wont last long. The color was also much lighter than the toy he'd been playing with that belonged to the guest dog but I figured it might just be from a different dye lot (it was not bought at Amazon but their local pet store.) I am not convinced this is a real Zanies toy. There were two labels in French and it said it was made in China. I am returning this toy and will get a replacement and see how it looks. If it seems like it will fall apart or is not the real thing I will return it immediately. If it has a label and is in good shape and sewn well at the seams I'll revise this review.

Fantastic Dog Toy!!!
Color: Purple
This is a great toy!!! My dog has lots of toys. But one of the problems is he has trouble getting the squeaker to squeak. He's an 18 lb terrier mix, and those squeakers are just elusive. Breaks my heart. This one, though, the squeakers (there are two) are in small areas (head and tail), that are easy for him to get his whole mouth around and squeak. They also don't move, which also makes them easy to squeak. So he's been squeaking up a storm since he got this! Other plusses: * The material is great (soft, furry material, that seems to be of good quality). * The toy expands and contracts, which is fun. * It's pleasant to look at. All in all, I'd say this is one of the best dog toys I've ever bought for my dog. Highly recommended!

Great Toy in Spite of Everything.
Color: Purple
My dog is a border collie. She loves chewing, fetching, tug of war and catch. The first day we had this toy she chewed off two of the feet. I didn't give it much of a life span. Two weeks later she chewed off a third foot. Miraculously no stuffing was exposed. It has now been a month and the toy is still going strong, albeit with one foot! She loves it. It is now June 1st. It has been almost three months and I am retiring the toy. It no longer has any feet and the tail has been ripped open and stuffing is coming out. All in all I think I got my money's worth from this toy. I ordered another one. She still loves it!
