Swiss explorer and scholar John Lewis Burckhardt (1784-1817) devoted himself to the study of Arabic language and culture, and between 1809 and 1817 he explored Syria, the Hedjaz, the Levant, and Egypt under the assumed name Sheikh Ibrahim ibn Abdallah. His journeys began with a commission from the London-based African Association to seek the source of the Niger River. Disguised as an Arab and in constant danger of discovery and betrayal, he traveled to sites forbidden to Westerners and kept a diary rich in ethnographic, cultural, geographic, and political observations.Traveling by camel and donkey as well as on foot, Burckhardt endured profound hardships, including robbery and abandonment by unscrupulous guides and periodic bouts of dysentery, which ultimately killed him at the age of 32. He was buried as a Muslim, and the tombstone bears his assumed name. His enduring achievements include being the first modern European to lay eyes on the ancient Nabataean city of Petra and among the first to describe the customs of the Hadj pilgrimage. Burckhardt's accounts assisted Sir Richard Burton in his subsequent explorations, and they retain their fascinating historic value.

Serious Exfoliating Power
Color: Rectangular Gunmetal Grey, Color: Rectangular Gunmetal Grey
They possess some serious power! After working outside and managing to acquire some spots of stubborn grime that even abrasive soap wasn't tackling, I was excited to test a scrubber out. I ran it beneath water until the foam had softened and rubbed some soap into it, occasionally squeezing to generate some foam. The first time I used it, it felt a bit more abrasive than I personally cared for, but it felt softer the second time and was more comfortable. It demolished the spots of grime, I rinsed it out, squeezed as much water out, and left it to dry. It seems like the perfect size, and putting the strap around your hand makes it very comfortable to use. They do not require a lot of pressure to work, I found that gentle pressure was more than enough to clean and exfoliate. I'm not sure what to compare the material to, it's like an open cell foam that has some grit to it. I think the first point of failure will be the strap ripping off at some point with regular use. The strap feels a bit on the cheap side and is narrow, but it isn't uncomfortable to use at all! It's really just there to help you hold onto a soapy object in the shower, and give you something to hang it up by. All in all, the price is very reasonable for what you're getting and all foam will break down with use over time so they may require replacement, but they are far from single use!
