Sennheiser SKM 9000 NI COM B1-B4 Digital Handheld Transmitter (Nickel with Command Switch)

The Sennheiser SKM 9000 NI COM B1-B4 (Article Number: 504724) represents the peak tier of professional broadcast hardware within the reference Digital 9000 ecosystem. Engineered specifically for complex live broadcast environments, stadium sports reporting, and premier theater productions, this "body-only" modular handheld transmitter builds upon the elite architecture of the standard SKM 9000 by integrating a hardware Command Switch (COM).

The "NI COM" designation indicates its premium, reflection-free Brushed Nickel finish combined with that dedicated talkback/command button. This variant handles transmission over the B1-B4 upper UHF frequency spectrum (630.000 MHz to 718.000 MHz) across a fully agile 88 MHz switching bandwidth.

The Functional Impact of the "COM" Command Switch

The defining feature of the SKM 9000 NI COM is the physical toggle ring button situated directly on the microphone chassis. When configured alongside a matching Digital 9000 receiver channel equipped with a command routing matrix, pressing this button instantly re-routes the microphone's audio stream away from the main FOH (Front of House) or program broadcast feed and into an isolated talkback channel.

This allows a high-profile broadcast host, stage director, or live news reporter to seamlessly communicate with the internal production crew, monitor desk, or floor directors mid-show without ever needing a second microphone or a standalone bodypack system.

Key Acoustic and Digital RF Attributes

  • Uncompressed HD Digital Transmission: In High Definition (HD) Mode, the system completely bypasses traditional analog companding algorithms. It transmits a pristine, raw 24-bit digital audio stream that mirrors a top-tier studio cable connection, preserving immaculate dynamic peaks and linear high-frequency detailing.

  • Intermodulation-Free Equidistant Grid: Because the internal RF output stage acts completely linearly, it produces zero intermodulation distortion. This permits an equidistant frequency grid layout where operators can stack channels tightly at fixed, narrow 600 kHz intervals, eliminating the need for complex intermodulation coordination math.

  • Universal Modular Capsule Mechanics: Outfitted with Sennheiser's standard capsule interface. It is fully cross-compatible with Digital 9000 series heads (like the MD 9235 or ME 9002), legacy evolution wireless (G3/G4) and 2000 series heads, and master-studio Neumann KK 204 and KK 205 condenser capsules.

  • Hardware AES 256 Encryption: Includes built-in, military-grade AES 256 encryption protocols to secure the digital RF data stream against unauthorized scanning or hijacking during high-level corporate events, political debates, or private broadcasts.

Production Deployment and Command Configuration Advice

Configuring the Talkback Logic: To utilize the command functionality, the transmitter must be synced via infrared to an EM 9046 receiver bay that has been configured for routing logic. Within the receiver menu interface, assign the "COM" function to route your primary output audio to the chosen Dante network link or secondary physical XLR outputs on the back of the rack unit when the button is engaged. Ensure the talent understands whether the switch is configured as a momentary push-to-talk button or a latching on/off toggle.

Managing Stage Contacts and Threading: When changing capsules over the brushed nickel handle, make sure that both the internal contact pins and the concentric gold rings underneath the mic head remain pristine. Never wipe the gold contacts with abrasive materials. When screwing down the capsule, thread it by hand smoothly until it is firmly locked down flush; over-tightening with hand tools can strip the internal threads or permanently crush the contact pins.

Student Review
This book is an excellent introduction to the basic principles of insurance. We used this text as a supplement in our Intro to Act. Sci. class. It is very readable, easy to understand. Minimal mathematics required, some basic calculus concepts used, but only briefly. Don't let it's small size fool ya, it has plenty of information in there.

A #MustRead for cybersecurity practitioners
Format: Kindle
Rick Howard's latest book is the ultimate reference for cybersecurity practitioners, making it an essential read for anyone in the field. With his straightforward and refreshingly irreverent writing style, coupled with his profound technical knowledge, Rick has created a narrative that is easy to understand and grasp. He delves into the foundational aspect of cybersecurity, which he refers to as the cybersecurity first principle, which he then it to specific high-impact strategies. The book has eight well-written chapters providing a comprehensive overview of those strategies. Importantly, Rick then offers an up-to-date and thorough exploration of the complementary capabilities (tactical-level tools) that can be utilized to "reduce the probability of material impact due to a cyber event" - the cyber first principle. In the concluding chapter, Rick succinctly summarizes his contribution to the field, stating, "And that's it. Those are all the tools you need to design, build, and enhance a cybersecurity program based on first principle thinking." This assertion highlights the value of his book as a practical guide for designing and improving cybersecurity programs with a focus on first principles.

Absolute must read if you oversee any portion of a cyber security program!
Format: Paperback
I loved this book. The concepts and ideas presented are a great wake up call for an industry that is so focused on blinking light hardware and the next big technological thing...this book challenges the paradigm that you need to strip your security culture down to some very core ideas...then build a solid security program around your security first principle(s). Without that core idea, you're just throwing away money on tools that may not actually be addressing your root needs. Great read for anyone looking to rethink their security program, security culture, and security spend. BRAVO!

Context, Strategies and Wisdom in a single package
Format: Kindle
This was my first book I have read by this particular author. I had spent some time looking for a comphrensive approach to Cyber Security and found many other texts to be lacking. Certain aspects are well documented, but no single source that brought it all together. This is exactly what First Principles brings to the table. As a practicioner that looks for better ways to formulate the objectives of SecOps Use Cases I have found the methods presented in this book to be immensely helpful. I have also given copies aways as a gifts to students who are just entering the field as this is by far the best intro to the long history of Cyber Security that combines the best direction for the future. The historical context that the author brings through first hand experience is beyond a treasure trove. It has been said many times in cheezy ads, but honestly, if you only read one book on Cyber Security make it this one.
