This is a very rare and unique Indian Mughal style brooch made by master costume jeweler Kenneth Lane in 1965. This brooch is featured on page 123 of the October 1965 issue of McCall's Magazine. The brooch is so perfectly Indian that it would have been quite at home in a Maharaja's court.
Inspired by a formative trip to India, Kenneth Jay Lane designed an incredibly rich and luxurious collection of jewelry that incorporated aspects of the antique court jewelry of the Maharanis and the architectural and decorative elements abundant with patterns and bold colors that permeate daily life in India.
The design of this brooch is complex and intricate, yet it retains the purely organic handmade authenticity of the ancient Indian jewelry that inspired this piece.
The structure of the brooch is made of metal that has been gold plated with a satin sheen. The base metal may be brass, which would account for the rich, warm color.
The brooch is in the shape of a stylized flower. At the center is a very architectural three-dimensional form that resembles a temple of sorts. Surrounding this form are two rows of small, delicate shiny white faux pearls. Bordering the pearls is a rope motif. The "petals" of the flower are paisley shaped. At the center of each petal is a raised bezel-set dark emerald green rhinestone and a bezel-set small dark ruby rhinestone. Surrounding these rhinestones are white faux pearls bordered with the same rope motif.
The brooch is signed "K.J.L." in an oval cartouche on the reverse.
