Designed by Arts & Crafts expert Gregory Paolini, this sideboard is a scaled-down version of the venerable pieces that inspired it. So it fits nicely in dining areas that are smaller than the formal dining rooms of yesteryear.
Designed in the true spirit of Arts & Crafts. True to form, this sideboard is made of quartersawn white oak and retains the muscular design of its predecessors. When it comes to joinery, this piece, like most Arts & Crafts furniture, relies heavily on the strength of the mortise-and-tenon. It’s the primary joint in this sideboard, too, which is made almost entirely with frame-and-panel construction.
A simplified approach to construction. It is not difficult to cut a bunch of mortise-and-tenon joints, but taken together, these joints can create serious headaches when assembling a piece with as many parts as this sideboard, To avoid problems, the sideboard is broken down into manageable subassemblies that can be added one at time. The subassemblies are then joined together with screws, making the glue-up much easier.
A stylish and practical addition to any dining area. This sideboard works well in an eating area or a dining room. The drawers are perfect for linens and silverware, the cupboards easily accommodate serving trays, and the top makes a welcome staging area for the dishes to be served. And with this plan, it’s easier to build than you might have thought at first.
