Released in the fall of 1996, Among My Swan marked Mazzy Star’s third and final studio album for Capitol Records, closing out the band’s celebrated 1990s run with a more stripped-down and intimate sound. While not as commercially visible in the US as its predecessor So Tonight That I Might See, the album nonetheless deepened the duo’s mystique and influence. Lead single “Flowers in December” became their highest-charting track in the UK, reaching No. 40.
Produced by guitarist David Roback, the record eschews much of the heavy reverb and haze that defined earlier material, instead favouring quieter arrangements and raw acoustic textures. Songs like “I’ve Been Let Down” and “Disappear” highlight Hope Sandoval’s hushed vocal delivery, accompanied by harmonica, fingerpicked guitar, and sparse percussion. Despite the band’s decision to avoid major promotional campaigns, Among My Swan still found its audience, buoyed by soundtrack appearances and a cult following that embraced the record’s somber elegance.
Peaking at No. 67 on the Billboard 200, the album slowly built a legacy over time. It would also be Mazzy Star’s final new release for over a decade, as the band entered a long hiatus shortly after. In retrospect, Among My Swan stands as one of the band’s most intimate and unadorned works—quietly resonant, emotionally direct, and steeped in a timeless melancholy.
