The Chronicles of Life and Death, Good Charlotte’s third studio album, was released on October 5, 2004, through Epic and Daylight Records. The album, recorded between March and June 2004 at Barefoot Studios in Hollywood, California, featured songs written by Benji and Joel Madden, as well as co-writes with producer Eric Valentine, Goldfinger frontman John Feldmann, or guitarist Billy Martin. The album was preceded by the single “Predictable”. Two variations, “Life” and “Death” versions, were released with different cover artwork and bonus tracks.
Drummer Chris Wilson, in therapy, missed initial promotional appearances. Derek Grant filled in during the US tour with Sum 41. “I Just Wanna Live” was released in early 2005, followed by tours in Japan, New Zealand, Australia, and Europe. The band co-headlined the Noise to the World Tour with Simple Plan in May and June, releasing the title track as a single. Wilson left, replaced by Dean Butterworth. “We Believe” was released in August, coinciding with European festival appearances.
Critics mixed the reception, some finding the lyrics shallow, others praising the instrumentation and tone. Despite this, The Chronicles of Life and Death debuted at number three on the Billboard 200, the band’s highest, and sold 199,000 copies in its first week. It was certified platinum and as of February 2007, had sold 1.1 million copies. The album was successful internationally, charting at number one in Australia, reaching the top 10 in Canada, Japan, and the UK, and the top 20 in several others. It was certified platinum in Australia and gold in Austria, Germany, and the UK. “Predictable” and “I Just Wanna Live” charted on US radio and reached the top 40 in Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, and the UK.
