artist biography
John Folke Axel Herman Karlsson was born September 7, 1907 in Hagalund. He was a Swedish artist, illustrator and designer.
Karlsson studied at the Konstfack )University of Arts, Crafts and Design) in Stockholm from 1924 to 1929. He took study trips to Landeskunstschule in Hamburg as well as on trips to Paris, Amsterdam, Austria, Switzerland and Helsinki. He worked for a few years a costume designer for the Opera and did a. the costumes for a production of Boccaccio. Between 1930 and 1936 he was worked at the renowned Swedish ceramics company Gustavsberg. As an illustrator he produced work for books including several of the Bibliofila Club's editions - a. A. von Arnim, Majoratsherrarna (The Lords of Majority) (1948), B. le Bo-vier de Fontenelle, Samtal mellan dö-da (Conversation Between the Dead) (1950), E. Swedenborg, 6 minnesvärda berättelser (6 Memorable Stories) (1948), and J. Swift, Isaac Bickerstaff svarar Mr Sturdy (Isaac Bickerstaff Answers Mr. Sturdy) (1949). He also did illustrations for magazines and newspapers,
Karlsson exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions. Solo shows include ones at Modern konst i hemmiljö (Modern Art in the Home) in Stockholm in 1942, Galerie S:t Lucas in 1943, Galleri Acté in Stockholm in 1949, Nyttokonst in Nyköping and Konstsalong Rålambshof in Stockholm. Alongside Roll Sörensen, he exhibited at Forsviks skola on Lidingö. He also exhibited regularly in group exhibitions including ones hosted by Sveriges almänna konstförening (Swedish General Art Association).
He painted urban scenes, still lifes portraits, and landscapes. in oil tempera, pastel and watercolour.
Examples of his works are held in public collections including the Stockholm City Museum.
Karlsson passed away on February 28, 1988 in Brännkyrka.
