artist biography
Nils Edvin Hansson was born in on February 3, 1900 in Ystad. He was a Swedish painter and sculptor.
Hansson first trained as a horticulturalist between 1919 and 1920, and in 1921 transferred to America where he established his own business as a gardener. While running his business, he studied art for various periods at the Cleveland School of Art in Ohio between 1923 and 1928 and sculpture at the Cranbrook Academy in Detroit in 1936. He participated in sculpture exhibitions on several occasions at the Cleveland Art Museum between 1930 and 1937, as well as exhibitions in Cincinnati and New York. After returning to Sweden in 1937, he was for a period an assistant to important Swedish sculptor Carl Milles (1875-1955) but was mainly active as a painter. Select exhibitions include a solo show at the Karlskoga konsthall in 1943, 1948 and 1952, and at galleries Solna in 1949, Eskilstuna in 1950, Malmö in 1950, Ystad in 1951 and in Norrköping in 1954. He regularly participated in group exhibitions with the Sveriges allmänna konstförening (Sweden's general art association).
He painted still lifes, portraits, landscape paintings from Skåne's south coast and the Stockholm area. In sculpture he produced figurative works.
Hansson is represented at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Ystads Konstmuseum and Trelleborgs Museum.
He passed away in 1996.
