Of all the visitors a cottage garden hopes for, butterflies may be the most cherished — small, brief, vivid arrivals that make a summer afternoon feel suspended. These butterfly garden stakes are a quiet acknowledgement of those visitors: hand-finished steel butterflies on slim stakes, designed to settle into your planting like a moment paused.

From LV Bespoke, our trusted Norfolk maker — supplied in raw steel, designed to weather and rust into a soft patina that lets the piece settle into your garden as if it had always belonged there. Available in two heights, designed to work either as standalone focal points or together as a pair amongst your planting.

Two heights, two uses

Note: please confirm the exact dimensions with the maker before publishing. The supplied dimensions appear to contain a typo. Assumed corrections shown below.

  • Large Butterfly Stake — approximately 1000mm tall × 180mm wide. Stands proud above most herbaceous planting — a focal point amongst grasses, perennials, or against an open sky
  • Small Butterfly Stake — approximately 400mm tall × 120mm wide. Sits within the planting rather than above it — peeking out from amongst lower perennials, hostas, or container plantings

The two heights work beautifully as a pair. A tall stake amongst the back of a border with a small one tucked into the front planting creates a visual rhyme that lifts the whole scheme — the kind of small considered detail that distinguishes a thoughtful garden from a busy one.

Where they look loveliest

These are at their best when they feel discovered rather than displayed:

  • Tucked between perennials in a soft, naturalistic border
  • Amongst flowering plants beloved of butterflies — buddleia, verbena bonariensis, lavender, scabious, sedum — where the metal piece nods to the real visitors the planting attracts
  • In a wildflower patch or meadow planting — a small piece of stillness amongst the movement of grasses
  • In containers as a focal point amongst trailing or low planting
  • Lining a pathway in a small group, alternating heights
  • Beside a sitting spot or bench — somewhere the eye naturally rests, given a small detail to find

The rust patina

Supplied in raw steel and designed to develop a natural rust patina over time, particularly outdoors. Within a few weeks of weather they'll begin to take on a warm, mottled rust tone; over months and seasons it deepens and softens further. The result is a piece that feels rooted in your garden rather than imposed onto it — and one that the actual butterflies, importantly, treat as part of their landscape rather than something new and alarming.

If you'd prefer to keep them looking newer for longer, a clear protective wax or matte lacquer applied on arrival will slow the process considerably.

Pollinator-friendly gardening

If you're stocking up on butterfly stakes, it's worth thinking about the planting that brings the actual visitors. Some of the most reliably butterfly-attracting cottage garden plants:

  • Buddleia — the famous "butterfly bush"; covered in small and large tortoiseshells, peacocks and red admirals through summer
  • Verbena bonariensis — tall, airy, magnetic to butterflies and bees
  • Lavender — particularly the early-flowering English lavenders
  • Sedum (autumn joy) — late-season nectar when little else is flowering
  • Scabious, knapweed and ice plants — flat-headed flowers butterflies can land on easily
  • Marjoram, oregano and chives left to flower — simple herbs, surprisingly effective

Pair these stakes with a planting scheme designed for butterflies and you'll have both the metal and the live visitors in the same border — the homage and the real thing, side by side.

Other LV Bespoke garden ornaments

If you like these, you may also like the other LV Bespoke pieces we stock — all from the same Norfolk maker, all in raw steel designed to rust naturally:

  • Bird & Insect Garden Stakes — a wider range of nine designs (swallow, dragonfly, bee, butterfly, owl) in two heights
  • 3D Orb Decorative Garden Stake — clear orbs with embedded designs (dragonflies, butterflies, hummingbirds, more) on tall stakes
  • Bird Feeding Stake (Large, 2-arm) — generous hanging stake for feeders, fat balls and water dishes
  • Bespoke Marble Steel Crown — the substantial centrepiece of the LV range
  • Garden Edging — bar-and-ball Victorian-style panels

If you'd like a coherent group of LV Bespoke pieces in your garden, the rust patina will harmonise across them all over time — they'll age together as a properly considered set.

About LV Bespoke

LV Bespoke is a small Norfolk maker producing handcrafted metal accessories for the garden and home. Each piece is made by hand in raw steel — designed to do its job quietly, age gracefully, and look like it belongs. We're proud to stock their work; objects with this kind of character don't come from factories, they come from somebody's careful hands.

A small thought: butterflies are notoriously picky about whether they actually visit a garden. They want sun, shelter from wind, the right nectar plants, no pesticides, a patch of bare earth for puddling on warm days. Putting up these stakes won't bring them by itself — but creating a garden that earns them, and marking it with these small steel reminders that you care about their visits, is the kind of quiet act of welcome that suits a cottage garden exactly.

Heavy duty for sure
Color: Purple
Heavy duty toy. This ball has some weight to it! I have a smaller laber doodle that thinks she's a German Shepard so no toy is too big or heavy for her. She's been chewing on this for months but you'd never know it. The squeaker is even hard for me to activate with my hands. She hits it in the right spot every now and again and gets excited about it. Great if your not crazy about hearing a squeaker squeaking non stop!

All dog sizes can enjoy this ball!
Color: Orange
This is a terrific dog ball! Our Pittie can't tear it apart on day 2 which is unusual! Also, its big enough that he can't swallow it but not so huge that our mini Doodle can't enjoy it too! We have more than one of these to keep our pups busy!

Finally, a ball that made it!
Color: Blue, Color: Blue
I don’t know what is it with this ball, but it’s special. My dogs can absolutely tear up anything and this one seems like it can be chewed up but my dog loves it too much. He carries it all day, nibbles it and loves the squeaky sound of course. Finally found a winner!

Good size ball for my big boy
Color: Purple
My big boy loves this ball. He chews and chews and chews on it and it ain't made a dent in it. It's made a good quality rubber. It's got a squeaker in it. He hasn't managed to get it out which is not normal because normally he can get a squeaky out within 10 minutes. He goes through toys like I don't know what so it's being being a good. Really good ball. We've had it for about 2-3 months now and he hasn't been able to break into it and get squeaky out or even make a dent into it. That would tear up the the rubber
