Мольєр — сценічний псевдонім Жана-Батиста Поклена (1622–1673), за яким у світі знають цього французького драматурга та актора, засновника жанру високої комедії, де йому вдалося блискуче поєднати трагічне  й комічне, жартівливе й серйозне. За словами Мольєра, комедія має таврувати людські вади, завдавати їм нищівного удару. 'Найблискучіші трактати на теми моралі часто справляють значно менший вплив, ніж сатира, бо ніщо не бере так людей за живе, як зображення їхніх недоліків', запевняв драматург. І небезпідставно. За свої найвідоміші п'єси, зокрема, 'Мізантроп', 'Скупий', 'Міщанин-шляхтич', 'Лікар мимоволі', 'Кумедні манірниці', в яких висміювалися лицемірство, манірність, пихатість, обмеженість, скнарість, жадоба до наживи, автор наражався на критику й відверті погрози від носіїв цих негативних якостей.  А такі шедеври як 'Тартюф' і 'Дон Жуан' неодноразово забороняли ті, хто мав змогу помститися. У виданні вміщено й інші видатні творіння драматурга, які впродовж  майже чотирьох століть з незмінним успіхом тішать глядачів і читачів.
