Paperback

A brilliant, clear-eyed consideration of the visual representation of violence in our culture—its ubiquity, meanings, and effects.

Considered one of the greatest critics of her generation, Susan Sontag followed up her monumental On Photography with an extended study of human violence, reflecting on a question first posed by Virginia Woolf in Three Guineas: How in your opinion are we to prevent war?

“For a long time some people believed that if the horror could be made vivid enough, most people would finally take in the outrageousness, the insanity of war.”

One of the distinguishing features of modern life is that it supplies countless opportunities for regarding (at a distance, through the medium of photography) horrors taking place throughout the world. But are viewers inured—or incited—to violence by the depiction of cruelty? Is the viewer’s perception of reality eroded by the daily barrage of such images? What does it mean to care about the suffering of others far away?

First published more than twenty years after her now-classic book On Photography, which changed how we understand the very condition of being modern, Regarding the Pain of Others challenges our thinking not only about the uses and means of images, but about how war itself is waged (and understood) in our time, the limits of sympathy, and the obligations of conscience.

A Comprehensive Pocket Guide to Christian Living
Format: Paperback
Looking for a book on discipleship? Not sure what discipleship is, or how it relates to Christian living? Want to learn more about how God grows us and wants us to grow? May I recommend Mapping Discipleship, a 2025 release from Faith Publications by Charlie Carter, co-host of The Thinklings Podcast (my favorite podcast). I pre-ordered my copy and read it shortly after its (early 👏) arrival. I ended up using it as my devotions, taking extra time to read the suggested passages and think through the reflection questions. Some pros of this book are -its small, short size: the chapters themselves are short, making the book more of a "pocket guide" than an intimidating, extensive treatise. -its catechism style: each chapter's title is a question that the chapter itself answers with Scripture, personal examples, illustrations and analogies, and practical application. Each chapter builds on the next, so start at the beginning. -its organization: the division of chapters into 3 parts (recognition, renewal, and results -- not exact) makes for a logical progression easy to follow and to implement. -its depth: though small, Mapping Discipleship packs a big punch in the way it lays out and digs into foundational truths of Christian living and how we grow. Deep thoughts and rich language. Chew slowly. Mapping Discipleship's only con (for me) is also its pro: its length. A few places I would have loved more fleshed-out discussion and maybe some additional resources. I'd love to share some of the quotes that impacted me, but I already lent my copy out to a friend. 😅 Just get your own copy -- you will be challenged and blessed!
