Story

I spent fifteen years of my life in the West Coast town of Tofino, B.C., and half of that time I spent on Chesterman Beach, just outside town. Seven years of experiencing the sun and the rain, the storms of winter and the sunny days and westerly winds of summer left me with the realization that there is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing. Some of my lifetime achievements and most treasured memories came from a time when I lived in that small fishing village on the West Coast of Vancouver Island.

During the first week of September 1997, I returned to the beach on one of my many visits to Tofino and Eagle Aerie Gallery. It was Saturday and the late afternoon was peaceful and clear as dusk approached. My excitement was high in anticipation of a sunset. It was not long before I found myself at the end of the beach with a camera in hand, attempting to catch the magic. I was standing in a cleft in the rocks watching the shadows lengthen with the setting sun. The tide was out, and the colors reflected in the wet sand. There were silhouettes of four people walking the beach, and their presence reminded me that I am never alone.

Although I do not live in Tofino anymore, I am able to visit often and enjoy the town, the people who mean so much to me, and the beaches. So it is with much pleasure that I return to Tofino and South Chesterman to create this work that will hang in my studio to remind me of one of my favorite places in the world.
