The story is set in his mythical upper middle-class community of Shady Hill, presents a satirical commentary on suburban social climbing and bourgeois values.

The apparent kidnapping of the Woosters' grandson disrupts his family and the town, and sets off a series of ridiculous events including a fake ransom note, a fundraising campaign that culminates in an antic parade, and a SWAT operation conducted by overzealous agents. Interspersed through this tale are satirical "commercial spots" featuring Celeste Holm, who promotes the fictitious beauty product Elixircal.
