A fine French crystal cheese bell or cheese dome with matching platter, c. 1880, engraved with the initials "BC" and flowers. A beautiful presentation piece for entertaining. Unsigned, which is not unusual as many French companies were using paper labels at this time. Note: the dome and platter are photographed on a silver tray for contrast — the silver tray is not included; this listing is for the crystal cheese bell and under-plate only.
Provenance
French, c. 1880. Unsigned. Baccarat did not officially start acid etching their name on pieces until the 1930's. Prior to that time frame many pieces carried a paper label, which was often lost in the usage of the item or over time. Checking the catalogs is one way to identify Baccarat pieces. The design of this cheese bell does appear in Baccarat catalogs. The engraving is consistent with a quality producer.
