My Phantoms

An electric, compelling, often painfully funny portrait of family relationships, which shows the damage we can do in the course of a life.

SHORTLISTED FOR THE RATHBONES FOLIO PRIZE'What a phenomenal ear she has, and how remorselessly funny she is - My Phantoms is unmissably good' Kevin Barry, author of Night Boat to TangierHelen Grant has always been a mystery to her daughter. A twice-divorced mother-of-two she has sought intimacy in all the wrong places. Her daughter Bridget sees her once a year and considers the problem contained. But as she looks back over their fractious relationship, she is forced to confront cruelties inflicted on both sides. My Phantoms is an insightful and painfully funny account of a family strained to breaking point, and a reckoning with the damage we do over the course of a life. My Phantoms was a Book of the Year in the Observer, the Daily Telegraph, the Irish Times, the Guardian, The White Review, the Evening Standard, the Big Issue, the TLS, the Week and the New Statesman.

'What a phenomenal ear she has, and how remorselessly funny she is - My Phantoms is unmissably good' - Night Boat to Tangier

'A writer of singular vision' - Guardian

'Take up the gauntlet with Gwendoline Riley: it's worth it' - TLS

'[Riley] fixes her parents on the page with darkly comic precision, mercilessly attendant to their tics and repetitions... Deliciously uncomfortable' - Guardian

'Riley's novels get under your skin. My Phantoms is unsettling for many reasons - the way it picks at the scab of unconditional love, the way it interrogates questions of inheritance and influence. More than anything, though, it's the fact that it chips away at the compact between reader and narrator... devastating, bleak, unforgettable' - Observer

'Insidiously powerful... There's a lot of sentimental, affirmative fiction about femininity out there at the moment. This jagged little novel stands as a bracing corrective' - Evening Standard

'Riley is a laureate of the stilted, and the dialogue crackles with repetitions, unsaid ellipses, contradictions... There is a great deal of psychological perceptiveness in this slim novel... [My Phantoms sets] itself apart, and is vital, and dashing' - Scotsman

'By some way Riley's best book, a crisply devastating record of a mother-daughter dynamic' - New Statesman

'A masterpiece in compression... My Phantoms leaves us with a precise and bleak-humoured portrait of the phantoms that can haunt a family' - Literary Review

'One for anyone who has struggled with their relationship with their mother. Riley dials up the tension as she skewers familial love' - i Paper

'Gwendoline Riley's unsentimental fiction hovers on the edge of comedy and bleakness... My Phantoms is a distilled psychological tour de force from an exceptional writer' - Spectator

'Riley misses nothing, and her icy evocations of dysfunction and distress are unforgettable' - TLS

'Riley has the ability to draw out the subtle workings and cruelties of relationships and psyches, and wrest them into compact, hard-hitting stories' - FT

'Deeply sad and uncomfortable but savagely funny, too... Riley's prose echoes the repressed trauma that suffuses the novel - spare and elegant' - i Paper

'My Phantoms is completely devastating' - Oldie

'A riveting, merciless little novel' - Sunday Times

'One of those books in which nothing much happens and everything happens... a brilliant brief, acerbic, witty, dark read that I can't recommend heartily enough' - BBC Scotland

'Unsettlingly funny and sharply observant... With notes of Sally Rooney's style in its tightly-written dialogue' - Independent

'My Phantoms effectively captures the ennui of our times... raw ingenuity' - Irish Times

'Unflinching and excruciating, but at times grimly hilarious' - New Statesman

'Riley's seventh novel is a slender, quietly savage riposte to the sentimentality that so often defines depictions of family bonds' - Mail on Sunday

'A novel of squirmy, excruciating humour but also poignancy and pathos... Riley's ear for how people speak, and how to render that in the artifice of the novel, has never been deployed more successfully' - Yorkshire Post

'A brilliant novel... Riley has always been especially skilled at psychological minutiae' - New Left Review

'Short but exceptionally hard-hitting' - Financial Times

'As droll as it is unnerving' - Evening Standard

'Unsettlingly funny and sharply observant' - Sunday Post

'Bleak, tough-minded, reeking with irony' - Private Eye

'A short, sharp shock of a novel [...] funny and devastating' - Guardian

'· A masterpiece of cruel precision and vivid emotional realism about a thwarted mother-daughter relationship [...] A genuinely extraordinary book' - Irish Times

'A slim but brilliant novel - managing to pull off caustic humour and heartbreaking sadness, often within the same line - and it confirms Riley as one of the most talented young writers in the UK today' - Financial Times

'Riley's writing is precise; her ability to pick up on human fallibility merciless... A work of genius' - Big Issue

Utopia bedding is GREAT
Color: 15 - Sage Green, Size: King
I had never heard of Utopia before I suddenly needed to buy bedding for my adult autistic son. He has sensory issues so shopping for anything that touches his body is a bit of a nightmare. I took a gamble on these sheets but it paid off big time! He says they are the most comfortable sheets he has ever slept on and that he doesn't overheat sleeping in them. What I liked about them is that the pockets were deep enough that it fit on his oversized plush mattress easily. I love the color and the ones I bought were very true to the picture. These are soft, comfy, they look nice and they are affordable. I liked this brand so much that I went ahead and got pillows and a comforter from them as well. Its is great for my son and I am very pleased to have found a fabric he tolerates.

For soft, sensually awesome sheets- LOOK no more!
Color: 15 - Sage Green, Size: Full
Would give 10 stars if possible! (And this is a nonpaid for review!) When I received the sheets, instantly I knew that I had the right ones, had bought a down comforter close in color as well.. these sheets? The material is strong yet, soft and warm. So so especially soft, and when I make up the bed, ahhh! plus the corners on the fitted, such a cinch to pull over the mattress, even with a topper on the bed! Feels almost spa-like <3 Very comfy, so far in the winter and in 85 degree heat! Soft and easy peasy to care for, too. Washing is a breeze, dry and fold. So far the only thing I can smell on these sheets is my wonderful detergent! Will purchase again. And possibly, again! Thank you!!

Soft luxury on a modest price
Color: 01 - White, Size: King
These sheets are truly luxurious. They are thin, but feel wonderful against your skin. The sheets are roomy enough to latch onto the corners without having to lift the mattress and stretch. The thread count provides incredible softness against your skin. The pillowcases are roomy enough for your pillow so that you do not have to feel like you’re stuffing sausages.

Honest Company making things right!
Color: 02 - Antique White, Size: California King, Color: 02 - Antique White, Size: California King
Love how this Californai sheet set feels and they fit very nicely on my bed. They are beautiful although I am unhappy with the 2 small holes I found in the fitted sheet after pulling them out of the packaging. I am past the return as I was not able to use them on my bed because I was moving and my bed was in storage. This is very disappointing for such a beautiful sheet set. UPDATE- I have reached out to the company and they were very kind and helpful. I stated the situation along with pictures and the order # and the company quickly responded with a new fitted sheet. Such a delight to find an honest company wanting to do the right thing. I Will order from this company again.

Very thin. You get what you pay for.
Color: 01 - White, Size: Queen
You get what you pay for. I first noticed the softness which was great. The quality is very thin. They are cool which is great. I have not washed them yet. I would suggest washing them on cool and gentle by themselves. And because they are so thin I would fluff dry for an hour if you have that setting. The two things that damages clothes and sheets, etc. are if you have an agitator in your washer, those ruin clothes and the heat you choose for the fabric you’re drying I always wash my clothes on cold. I do not have an agitator anymore and on delicate and thin fabrics, I use fluff dry. It is cool, but it will dry, especially if it is thin and I’ve had to dry my fine delicates a little bit longer on fluff that way they don’t shrink because the shrinking comes in from the heat from the dryer so keep that in mind another good thing to remember if you got white sheets like I did is that when you use your detergent add a little bit of borax or laundry booster and they will help get them clean and sparkly white. I am on the fence about whether I would recommend this or not if you’re tight on money and you take good care of them I would recommend that you get them. I’m a linen freak and I buy mostly expensive sheets and I thought I would try this out so that’s where I’m at.
