У його баченні імперії постають у двох формах: ендогенній, як централізовані утворення, що виростають із внутрішніх ресурсів (Китай, Рим, Персія), та тіньовій, або екзогенній, яка формується у взаємодії з потужнішими цивілізаціями на їхніх периферіях. Барфілд вишукано проводить читача крізь розмаїття імперських форм — від Атен, Каролінгів і Омеядів до кочових моделей Хунну, Монгольської імперії та маньчжурської династії Цін. Серед них і Київська Русь — вакуумна імперія, що виникла між степом і лісом, на теренах, які не мали усталених імперських структур.

Чимало стратегій, які імперії випрацювали в минулому, діють і сьогодні. Росія еволюціонувала від тіньового утворення до централізованої системи з колоніальними амбіціями. Китай продовжує традицію імперського самовідтворення, поєднуючи націоналізм та комунізм. Європейський Союз, попри постнаціональний характер, частково наслідує Священну Римську імперію, а США, не визнаючи імперської ідентичности, фактично виконують її глобальні функції.
