Overview:

When increasing the power output of your VW or Audi 4 cylinder engine, internal parts begin to fail as they are pushed far beyond their original factory spec limits. Integrated Engineering Forged Connecting Rods are designed to replace the factory units and take the beating from today's high-output power modifications. Drive fast and reliably with IE performance rods, guaranteed to support 700HP!

H BEAM DESIGN

The H-beam design is the workhorse of our connecting rod product line. This design features strength, durability, stiffness, and rigidity. IE H-beam Connecting Rods are a great upgrade over weaker factory units.

COMPUTER OPTIMIZED

All IE rods are designed specifically for the application using relevant cylinder pressure and other application-specific factors. We put our vast European engine knowledge to use when designing each application.

RIFLE DRILLING

Also referred to as Forced Pin Oiling (FPO), rifle drilling increases wrist pin longevity by providing additional lubrication. This upgrade is highly recommended for street-driven cars that see mileage put on them. Rifle drilling is sold separately on this application.

HONED IN-HOUSE

Honing the connecting rod big end in-house on state of the art equipment ensures the tolerances are set correctly to ensure proper bearing operation. Lesser quality rods are often not honed with the same attention to detail.

MATERIAL FORGED 4340

Made from strong and durable 2 piece 4340 forgings these rods will withstand almost everything you can throw at them.

IE/ARP ROD BOLTS

All IE rods come standard with ARP 2000 rod bolts. The rod bolts included in every set of IE rods are stamped with the letters "IE" as a way to ensure you have a genuine set of IE rods.

INCLUDED ARP 2000 ROD BOLT TORQUE SPECS

*The following torque spec is for the included ARP 2000 3/8" rod bolts using the included ARP assembly lubricant only. Do not follow this guide using ARP +625, other assembly lubricants, or alternative bolts.

STRETCH GAUGE

The preferred method of measuring bolt load is with a stretch bolt gauge. The included ARP 2000 bolts need to be tightened and measured to .006” of stretch using the included ARP assembly lubricant.

TORQUE WRENCH

When using a high-quality torque wrench, first verify the torque wrench has not been dropped and is properly calibrated. A un-calibrated torque wrench can lead to under/over torque and rod bolt failure. Torque each rod bolt to a final torque of 50 ft/lbs. We recommend torquing the bolt, breaking it loose, and re-torquing the bolt 3 times per bolt. This ensures proper rod bolt stretch and that the rod cap is fully seated. Do not exceed 50 ft/lbs. This torque spec is based off the included ARP assembly lubricant.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

Connecting rods are some of the highest stressed components in an engine and thus require extreme attention to detail to ensure proper operation and reliability.  Integrated Engineering ensures the success of your next engine build by putting each set of connecting rods through a rigorous quality control process. For years Integrated Engineering H-beam Rods have been an integral part of delivering the power that the highest powered turbo setups and race engines demand.

Extra attention has been paid to even the smallest details such as the bearing tangs, wrist pin fit, and big end side clearance, providing a level of fit and finish not found anywhere else. Each and every set is finish machined and honed in-house for perfectly round and on size big-end bores, resulting in the industry's lowest failure rates. All rods in this series feature generous wrist pin oiling and optional rifle drilling.  One of the hallmarks of a high quality connecting rod is its strength to weight ratio. In order to create this balance of strength and lightweight, our optimized H beam design is utilized and validated using modern CAD drafting and FEA analysis techniques. These techniques ensure the rod is as light and strong as possible, perfected for today's powerful and high rpm European applications.

FAQ

Are these are a direct replacement for my factory rods?

  •  These rods fit several VW/Audi engines that use a 144x20mm rod. Due to the wide range of engines these rods fit, please see the applications table above.

Is there a proper orientation to install the bearing tangs on our connecting rods?

  •  We recommend installing the bearings tangs facing the exhaust side of the engine.

 Are these connecting rods forged?

  •  Yes, all Integrated Engineering Connecting Rods are made from tough and durable 4340 forgings. These forgings far exceed the quality of most factory rods that are typically made from powdered metal as a cost-saving measure.

What other parts will be needed to install my new IE connecting rod set?

  •  At a minimum, you should use a new set of connecting rod bearings when installing rods. We also offer several install kits to make this process as easy as possible. For more information on rod bearings and install kits, please see the install kits section above.

Do these rods require any additional machine work for installation?

  •  IE connecting rods are delivered to you in "ready to install" condition. Other engine machine work may be required though when rebuilding an engine, such as decking the block or boring and honing cylinder walls.

Is balancing the engine required when installing these connecting rods?

  •  Since IE rods are sold in balanced sets this is not required. For extreme performance application, this can still be done if desired.

How much do these rods weigh?

  •  The average weight of a single rod with bolts is 574 grams. Rod weights can vary slightly per set.  More technical information can be found in the basic dimensions section above as well.

What is the maximum RPM limit of these rods?

  •  The maximum RPM limit can be affected by many factors. In this application, we suggest not exceeding 8500 RPM with ARP 2000 bolts. If you plan on exceeding this RPM level, consider upgrading to ARP 625+ bolts.

When should I upgrade to ARP 625+ rod bolts?

  •  Generally speaking, high RPM conditions put the most stress on rod bolts as the rod and cap are literally being pulled in opposite directions. If you plan on pushing your engine far past factory redline or 8500 RPM  we would suggest upgrading to 625+ ARP bolts.

 Do I need rifle drilling?

  •  Rifle drilling is not required. However, we do strongly recommend it for daily driver and high mileage applications. Rifle drilling has been proven to extend wrist pin and bushing life and has also been utilized over the years in several VW/Audi factory connecting rods.

What is the horsepower rating on these connecting rods?

  •  Many high horsepower VW and Audi vehicles use IE rods. We rate our 4 cylinder H-beam rods for 700+ HP/ft-lb TQ. If you are planning on exceeding those levels we recommend upgrading to our Tuscan I-beam Rods (part number IERTVA1).

What pistons will these rods work with?

  •  We stock several high-quality piston options to suit your specific needs and to match our connecting rods. To see what we have to offer be sure to see our piston recommendations section above.

What are the most common reasons for connecting rod failure?

  •  As one of the highest stressed components in the engine, there are several things that can contribute to a failure. The most common failure is caused by improper installation followed by improper tuning. We recommend that you seek professional help for both installation and tuning. Oiling system health is also essential to ensuring safe engine operation. Momentary oil starvation can result in spun rod bearings and engine failure. In extreme applications also be sure that you are using heavy duty wrist pins. On many of the pistons we offer we either include stout wrist pins or offer them as an upgrade.

Nice simple effective inexpensive watch
Color: Black, Size: One Size
I just ordered my second one of these. They are cheap, keep good time, show me the date, and last a long time. My last one lasted over 10 years. The only thing wrong with the last one was that the battery needed replacement (I think it was only the second time it had needed a battery in all the years I had owned it) at the same time the band wore out and broke. Rather than buy a new battery plus a new band, I just got a new one. I am hard on watches, and this one stood up very well. I regularly shower and swim with it on, and no problems. It doesn't have a lot of functions I don't need, like stopwatch, multiple time zones, etc. I have found those things more of a bother than a benefit, because any time you bump the knob against something, the display changes and you're always pressing all the buttons multiple times just to get the simple info needed- like what time is it and what is the date DEC 2020 UPDATE - I am ordering another one of these. The last one, I bought in mid 2019. Early in 2020, the date function quit working. By the end of November, the whole thing quit working. I know it's not the battery, because the light still works. So I am reducing my review by one star, and we'll see how well a new one does. The watch before the current one lasted about 10 years, so getting only a little over a year out of the current one is not good. Perhaps the current one just wasn't as good as the previous ones. It's entirely possible that they keep making the same watch out of lesser and lesser materials and workmanship.

Timex. Life is ticking.
Color: Black, Size: One Size
A family member is headed off to Navy boot camp and is required to have a watch-a black watch. But...it cannot be anything in the realm of, be like, or indeed be an Apple Watch. The search began for a simple timepiece. Economy was important since after the 8 weeks of boot camp ended, use of the current watch would be resumed. Enter Timex...(the world's largest manufacturer of watches and mechanical time fuses). During the Amazon search there were all manner of economically (actually cheap) watches noted to be available, so many that it was simply overwhelming. Timex...tried and true since 1854 (just a fun fact, but actually attests to the quality of the company) was the chosen one. A simple but reliable timepiece was required, and certain qualifications were needed. First, it had to be an accurate time keeper and have a second hand, and have a date indicator. Secondly, there had to be an element of water resistance (this is Navy boot camp after all, so water is important!). Thirdly, it had to be black. Fourth, no bells or whistles whatsoever. Finally, a face with 24 hour/military time would be a bonus. This Timex Rugged Core Expedition Analog Watch fit the bill. Upon arrival it was packaged in a traditionally square box the size of the watch, no frills but sturdy enough to ward off damage during shipping. Once opened the first thing noticed was the face of the watch. It was black, with white numerals in both standard and 24 hour/military time, had a red second hand, luminescent hour and minute hands, and date indicator. The nylon band was also black, had ridges, and had a fastener like a belt. At the end of the band were two extrusions which seemed to lock the excess band into place once it was fastened. After wearing a number of days, the watch has kept excellent time matching the Apple Watch. Both watches were worn on the same arm at the same during the day and during sleep. They were worn during regular daily activities, during exercise and during strenuous garden work such as hauling, digging holes, dragging 40 lb bags, etc. Time was checked multiple times per day, and the time on each watch was exactly the same every time checked. The Timex was water resistant during a 5 minute shower and while submerged water. This is not a dive watch but, according to the ad, is water resistant to 50 feet for light swimming. The performance of this watch has been more than satisfactory executing in stellar fashion everything it was stated to be able to do. I can recommend this watch for boot camp purposes without reservation. Top 3 Likes: -Reliable keeping accurate time, has military time numerals -Is water resistant as tested -Is black, attractive with luminescent hands, second hand, date, and light up face Top 3 Dislikes: -The band is stiff and somewhat difficult to latch -The two little extrusions do anchor the band, but are difficult to undo to take off the watch -Only two dislikes!

Timesx quality still rules.
Color: Black, Size: One Size
Excellent everyday watch. Stylish, easy to read, and accurate. Needed a knock around watch and this puts up with it's share of abuse. It's a bit more expensive than some others in this class, but Timex is well-worth the money in quality. I use mine for eveything except when I need something more formal.

Dependability and accuracy
Color: Black, Size: One Size
This watch is awful, I had it for a month and it lags behind and does not keep the right date. I am a nurse so I need to have accuracy and dependability and this watch is not it.
