This striking bird tree carving was created by Ben F. Hoover (1931–2014), a respected Old Order Orthodox Mennonite folk artist from Pennsylvania. Over his lifetime, Ben whittled approximately 400 unique works, each hand-carved from wood and painted in vivid color by his daughter, Nora Hoover (1956–2014).

The Hoovers’ work reflects the Pennsylvania Dutch tradition of repurposing everyday materials into art that celebrates nature and simplicity. This piece features five colorful songbirds perched on a hand-carved branch with a turned wood base. Each bird is individually carved and painted in bright, lifelike detail, showcasing the family’s folk art heritage.

The bulk of Ben and Nora’s work was created between the late 1970s and 1990s. With the passing of both artists in 2014, this family tradition sadly came to an end.
