The S.T. Dupont Fidelio Black & Gold Ballpoint Pen embodies the refined elegance that defined many of S.T. Dupont's most successful writing instruments during the late twentieth century. Named after Beethoven's only opera, Fidelio, the collection reflects the same principles of sophistication, balance, and timeless style that have long distinguished the French maison's approach to luxury craftsmanship. Combining a deep black lacquer finish with richly contrasting gold-plated appointments, the Fidelio remains one of the most recognizable and enduring designs in S.T. Dupont's writing instrument history.

While modern luxury pens often pursue increasingly elaborate themes and decorative techniques, the Fidelio demonstrates the lasting appeal of restraint. Its design relies not upon excessive ornamentation but upon proportion, material quality, and meticulous finishing. The result is a writing instrument that feels equally appropriate in a boardroom, a personal study, or a collector's display case.

Craftsmanship & Design

The defining visual characteristic of the Fidelio is the contrast between its lustrous black lacquer and warm gold-plated trim. S.T. Dupont has long been regarded as one of the world's premier lacquer specialists, and the Fidelio showcases that expertise beautifully. The lacquer finish possesses remarkable depth and clarity, creating a mirror-like surface that enhances the pen's elegant silhouette.

Gold-plated appointments provide both visual warmth and architectural definition. The clip, trim rings, and decorative details create a harmonious balance against the dark lacquer, resulting in a classic color combination that has remained synonymous with luxury writing instruments for generations.

The pen's proportions reflect the design philosophy that made S.T. Dupont famous among collectors and professionals alike. Clean lines, precise construction, and understated detailing allow the materials themselves to take center stage. Rather than chasing trends, the Fidelio embraces a timeless aesthetic that remains as appealing today as when it was first introduced.

The S.T. Dupont Legacy

Founded in 1872, S.T. Dupont established its reputation through the creation of exceptional luxury goods distinguished by meticulous craftsmanship and uncompromising attention to detail. Over time, the company became particularly celebrated for its mastery of lacquer, precious metals, and precision engineering.

Writing instruments eventually became a natural extension of this tradition. Like the company's famous lighters and leather goods, S.T. Dupont pens were designed to deliver both functionality and refinement. The Fidelio collection emerged during a period when the company was producing some of its most elegant and enduring designs, emphasizing quality materials and timeless styling over fleeting fashion.

Today, vintage and discontinued S.T. Dupont writing instruments continue to attract collectors who appreciate the brand's distinctive combination of French luxury and practical usability.

Writing Experience

The Fidelio Ballpoint Pen was designed as a dependable everyday writing instrument while maintaining the sophistication expected from a luxury brand. Its balanced construction creates a comfortable writing experience, allowing the pen to feel substantial without becoming cumbersome during extended use.

The smooth twist mechanism operates with the precision expected of S.T. Dupont products, while the ballpoint format provides convenience, reliability, and ease of maintenance. Whether used for business correspondence, note-taking, signatures, or daily writing, the Fidelio delivers a writing experience focused on effortless functionality.

The pen's comfortable proportions and refined balance contribute to a sense of confidence in hand, reflecting the practical elegance that has long defined the best S.T. Dupont writing instruments.

Collector Significance

Among vintage S.T. Dupont writing instruments, the Fidelio occupies a particularly appealing position. It represents an era when luxury pen design emphasized enduring elegance rather than limited-edition complexity. As a result, collectors often seek Fidelio models for their versatility, understated sophistication, and connection to a period of exceptional French craftsmanship.

The Black & Gold variant is especially desirable because it captures the quintessential S.T. Dupont aesthetic. The combination of black lacquer and gold trim has become one of the most enduring visual signatures within the world of luxury writing instruments, offering a timeless appearance that transcends changing tastes.

For collectors of vintage S.T. Dupont pens and enthusiasts seeking a refined daily writer, the Fidelio Black & Gold remains a compelling example of why the brand continues to be respected among connoisseurs of fine writing instruments.

Nice wallet. Just received it and used on trip to Italy
Too early to rate for durability, but it came quickly, looks nice, and appears to be well-made. Was a godsend on my trip to Italy and back. With all the times you have to show your passport (usually dragging your luggage with you), my passport was always at the ready, secure in my wallet in my pocket. I would not travel abroad without it. Not only that, it will serve as my daily wallet as well

Pen holder feature isn't good
Color: Cocoa
Edited review: previously I gave this a two-star review because when I inserted the pen into the pen holder the wallet couldn't close anymore... I tried taking it out putting it back in a few times and it seemed obvious to me that something was wrong and I just could not figure out why the wallet possibly was having an issue closing even though it's designed to hold a pen... To me it seemed obvious that when inserting the pen you should have the clip on the inside where are the bills go.... That single millimeter of space that that clip takes up in the bill fold causes the wallet to not be able to close properly so it springs open. Needless to say that felt extremely cheap for a product of this price and I was very unhappy and considering a return and after writing a bad review I happen to see product pictures with the clip on the inside of the wallet where your cards go and it dawned on me that I had just simply put the pen in in the wrong orientation. That completely solves the issue. So updated back to five stars, and the wallet is great. 2n update after using it for a week on an international trip so I was carrying my passport. Worked great - made me feel safe to always have my passport and room for all my most important documents inside a -just- large enough for a passport wallet. I really don't think they could have saved another millimeter and still made such a quality wallet. Having a micro pen in there is icing on the cake - makes you feel like James bond. I also felt safer having a hidden bill compartment so your not showing a fat stack of foreign currency (I mean depends on your use case but I was in some rather poor areas and this added some peace of mind and 'security' in my opinion). You can just keep some small bills up front and your real stack on the hidden flap. I won't dock a star for it - but keeping this on a back pocket so you're sitting on it because it's bigger and the way it holds cards after just one week there's already card imprints on the leather (just imagine your older leather wallets where the cards start wearing through the leather) Also I tested the RFD blocking and it indeed works. I'm unable to scan any cards through the wallet and that was an important feature to me. Even when the wallet is open and I ran scanners directly over cards (in the sleeves) it still didn't pick anything up.

Works
Color: Cocoa
Good wallet that can fit a passport, hold cash, and cards. “Hidden” pockets too, but that just means more storage space to me. Soft and supple leather that gets better when conditioned and cared for properly. Main feature I like is the RFID blocking, I only get wallets that have it. Expensive- yes. Works, also yes.

Really bad amazon customer service
Color: Black
The wallet seems great but the box it came in wasn't sealed. It was supposed to arrive by the 22nd and it arrived 4 days later. I needed it for a trip on the 1st. When I took it out, the wallet had two scratches at the back and the pen was also scratched. I contacted customer service and they couldn't help me in any way to get the replacement item before my departure date. I kept it anyways because of thr necessity. Gave it 3 stars because of the good quality of the wallet

Great Wallet
I'm pretty particular when it comes to things that I need to carry at all times when I'm out. When looking for a new wallet back in 2014, I initially went with the oft recommended Saddleback Leather Medium Bifold. Initially, that wallet seemed to be both durable and well made. Unfortunately, after several months in the back pocket, two things became clear: first, the leather was so taught that it was breaking my credit cards in half at the pinch point of the credit card slot. Second, what I took for durability in the thickness of the leather quickly turned into nuisance as I ended up with an inch thick brick that ruined my seating comfort. I called Saddleback regarding the first point and they told me that it was a known issue and if I didn't like it I could send the wallet back, which I did. That left me at a crossroads with a new requirement: I wanted a leather wallet that was thin enough to not be uncomfortable, held 6 credit/id cards and a handful of bills. I searched around until I came across Bellroy. The travel wallet seemed to check all the boxes and added some features I never knew I needed. After 6 years of use, I finally decided that the original travel wallet I bought in 2014 had run its useful life, down to holes in the leather and all. I liked it so much, I bought another one. There are some subtle differences which I will highlight below. 1. Fits in Your Pocket This is ostensibly the best feature of the wallet. It is large in the two dimensions you shouldn't care about and thin where it counts. I have not found a pair of pants that I would wear that it doesn't fit in. With my passport, 6 credit/id cards, and a dozen bills it is roughly 3/4 inches thick. Fabulous. 2. The Right Pen I had no idea how useful the pen would be. I find occasion to pull it out at least once a week. I used to carry the wonderful Fisher Space Pen, but no longer do as this fills the role in a much for optimized way. Bellroy is kind enough to include an ink refill with every wallet and I still have the refill from 2014. That's not to delegitimize the previous point; the kind of things I write are forms and other short memos. I wouldn't use the pen to write a novel. The new wallet looks to have a pen that Bellroy have either white labelled or made themselves. I haven't yet written with it, but if it is at least as good as the Walkie it replaced, things should be fine. 3. Added Security The new wallet takes the split billfold and adds a flap that conveniently hides away the back section from prying eyes. In theory this seems like a useful feature. In practice, the flap is not quite long enough to allow for more than one or two bills without the cavity being visible when the wallet is opened. The new wallet also has RFID shielding which I don't recall being a feature of the old wallet. It sounds like a useful feature now that at least one of my credit cards has a contactless payment feature. 4. Leather It's a thin wallet so you should expect the leather to be thin as well. I got 6 years out of the first wallet and I'm not a guy who is easy on wallets. It has been in my pocket on rooftops doing solar installations, in machine shops, and on every kind of seat imaginable. My old wallet has been fully submerged in water more than once. With all that punishment, it outlasted the warranty by two times. None of the stitching has failed and the only real damage is two small holes in the outer leatherwork. If you are a business traveler, this should go out of style before it is rendered unusable from wear. In short, this is a great wallet for everyday use. I approve to the extent that I didn't look for a new choice when my old one wore out.
