Каталог выставки посвящен коллекции изделий из кварца. Впервые вместе представлены около 200 лучших эрмитажных памятников из различных отделов музея, которые выполнены из горного хрусталя и ближайших его "родственников": дымчатого кварца и аметиста.
Включены произведения, созданные на протяжении огромного периода - с V в. до н.э. до начала XX столетия, что дает возможность познакомиться с резчиками различных школ, стран и эпох. Изделия из горного хрусталя - таинственного и магического, чистого как родник и прозрачного как стекло - редко использовались утилитарно. Они были украшением кунсткамер или служили дипломатическими подарками. В каталог включены предметы, принадлежавшие кардиналу Альдобрандини, Анне Клевской, Яну Собескому, Августу Сильному, Петру I и др.
Многие памятники публикуются и воспроизводятся впервые, что делает каталог особенно интересным и значимым.
