As West-Coast gentrification washes a wave of loud and gritty garage bands away from San Francisco, Cool Ghouls stand strong. Just like the most revered, political records of the 60s and 70s, the third album Animal Races channels the past, the present and the future with an authentically fresh psych-rock take on American society through its own neo-cosmic language.

San Francisco has always been great and hopefully always will be but these days there are things we despise,” tells Ghoul guitarist and vocalist Pat McDonald, “the lifestyle The Bay once afforded artists has been decimated. This gold-rush of the tech industry is forcing prices up and it’s been a flood of bullshit. Some people are being forcibly displaced, others are disheartened and leave by choice. Our song ‘Never You Mind’ is a reminder to the creative community not to roll over. San Francisco isn’t dead until you let it die in your heart.

It’s impossible to separate Cool Ghouls from their adopted hometown. Whether playing dollar dice games and shooting pool or stepping out for a walk through the Californian hills, this is a band who swapped their young lives in stripmall suburbia to settle in the Shaky City of their electric heroes. The place where Gram Parsons’ Flying Burrito Brothers unwittingly inspired lesser-known followers of the Cosmic American gospel to commit readings to tape, Cool Ghouls slot right in the city’s rich musical lineage. Pat M, with Pat Thomas (bass/vocals), Ryan Wong (guitar/vocals), and Alex Fleshman (drums), made their own celestial pilgrimage to their place of worship and have established themselves as one of the city’s brightest young bands playing, against the backdrop of a chaotic big city, a laid-back psych-rock sound for the here and now.

Those who fell for the raw, primitive sound of the band’s 2014 album A Swirling Fire Burning Through the Rye (Empty Cellar Records / Burger Records) recorded with local hero Sonny Smith of Sonny And The Sunsets, will be pleasantly surprised by the Ghouls’ latest evolution in sound. This time recorded with melodic maestro Kelley Stoltz in his backyard Electric Duck studio, the album was mixed and mastered by Mikey Young (Total Control / Eddy Current Suppression Ring), and features full-colour artwork by Shannon Shaw of Shannon and The Clams.

Animal Races is the harvest of work we created between last year’s tours, working in bars, record stores and coffee shops,” says Pat M. “We chose the title because the song’s lyrics are a broad characterization of society. So any track on the album, whether it be about love, personal growth, death or whatever, takes place in the setting of the ‘animal races’ “.

Commenting just as much on the individual’s place in society as the San Francisco community itself, the theories of ‘self-actualization’ and ‘anima’ by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung about achieving individual potential pervade ‘If I Can’t Be The Man’ and ‘Material Love’. Whether time-hopping from the summer of love on ‘Sundial’ or channelling the freewheeling feeling of The Grateful Dead and Canned Heat through loud guitars, acid riffs, party screams, and stacked-as-f*ck three-part vocal harmonies, each of Animal Races’ 11 tracks bring the four-piece’s electrifying live performances to life.

‘Time Capsule’ is about exactly this, explains Pat T; when you replay a recorded track, that little chunk of time is brought into the current moment. This is especially true of a recording of a live performance. ‘Time Capsule’ was designed to open the door for improvisation and is the encapsulation of just one version of this song, each version specific to the one time we play it. It’s going to change a lot as we play it over the years.”

For a band who, just like society and the world itself, is constantly evolving, Cool Ghouls are the perfect antidote for San Francisco’s current state of mind, providing the real-life soundtrack whilst not letting the city’s culture be burned to the ground.

They paid on the policy
I bought a four year replacement policy on my modem and two years into its lifespan it stopped working. I trouble shot with the company but we eventually determined it was dead. I contacted Asurion, they sent me a pre-paid address label, I mailed the defective modem, they found that it was dead and deposited a credit in the amount of the original purchase in my Amazon account, all within a few days. I am quite happy with the service. Just so you know, the reimbursement is through a gift card at Amazon which you can draw down against your purchases; it is not CASH.

Nearly 3 years later, Asurion had my back :)
In Nov of 2017 I bought a $900 35" Ultra wide PC monitor for Gaming and Work. It was made by a company called AOC/Envision and I bought it through amazon. The monitor had a 3 year warranty that I was still within but they said no to a defect that they said was only covered for 1 year, even though it wasn't the type of defect that was only covered for 1 year. LUCKILY, back in 2017 I had purchased an Asurion insurance policy with this monitor. I told an Asurion agent in a instant messaging chat window on the Asurion website my problem and she sent me postage in an email. I shipped my product and in 5 days from shipping it I received a text telling me that it was beyond repair and I would be getting a FULL REFUND! Not 2hr later, in an email, there it was, an amazon gift card code for $900 I will not be making any big purchases without an Asurion plan going forward. Happy customer Don't buy anything AOC

Received a refund
I purchased the 4-year protection plan offered at the time I purchased a refurbished printer. Seven months later the printer failed, so I went searching through my Amazon orders for my protection plan and located it. Once I created an account on Asurion's website it showed the the plan but it was not attached to a specific purchase, so I had to locate and upload the invoice for my printer. Once that was done, the policy still wasn't linked for some unknown reason. I proceeded to start the claim anyway stating that my printer had failed and I received an immediate reply stating that a box would be shipped to me for me to return the printer for inspection/repair. After a week I hadn't seen any additional info so I called their support phone #. The service was very good and they had to create a new case to replace the one I started online, and they assured me that a shipping box would be sent. About a week later I did receive the box with a prepaid shipping label to return the item by UPS. I packaged the printer up and sent it off. I received updates stating that they received it, were looking at it and attempting repairs. Everything appeared to be going along well, then out of the blue they sent me a notification of a full refund in the form of an Amazon gift card. Overall I'm satisfied and I'm glad I purchased the coverage.

Worst Experience of my Life
My Epson printer had problems with it's software in early mid April, while trying to resolve the software glitch which I could not, I found that every picture I had scanned for some time had lines running through it and no cleaning process or other process that Epson had would get rid of it, and everything I had scanned for my project, was ruined. I sent the machine to Asurion following their instructions and explaining the issues. They sent it back to me after a month saying they had double checked and fixed everything, I spent some time setting it all back up, only to find that exactly the same two issues were still present and the machine was unusable. I sent in a second request, this time they sent it back to me a month later saying they couldn't find anything wrong with it. Hooked it up again, same problem. I complained numerous times asked for them to warranty the item; they would not unless I sent it back to them and they kept it and then they would give me a credit on my amazon account to buy a new one. I packed it up and drove to UPS a third time and mailed it back to them, after about three weeks they sent me a note that they had it and that they were sending it back to me as they couldn't find anything wrong. Three times I ha filled out their entire sheet with product, date of purchase, problems detailed, receipts, picture of the lines in the photos that it was making over all the scanned photos. Then after two weeks of back and forth they sent me a message telling me they couldn't warranty it until I filled all this information out again on line. Then they told me they couldn't read the tiny print off the receipt printed off the Amazon site, which I cannot change. I then blew up the receipts and circled everything and sent it back to them again...of course they already had now five copies of this same information, they had paid for postage three times to NY and back to fix it and they still aren't able to process a payment to me????? Finally I get a call from a gentleman telling me that I will have a credit to my Amazon Card in 72 hours. Great. Then he calls me back the next day and says the warranty team has decided they would not warranty the item and credit me but they will mail me a check in 7 to 10 days. After over four months of this I received a check...will it bounce? I don't know yet. My project that I was working on was for my mother's Celebration of Life, I could not do what I wanted to do for her, this caused me emotional pain, as well as the obvious frustration of four months of aggravation and complete and total ineptitude on their part.
