The ConCoPens Traditional Vietnamese Lacquer Fountain Pen - Then is a study in restraint, depth, and quiet craftsmanship. Finished in deep traditional Vietnamese lacquer, the pen presents an almost monochromatic surface at first glance, with subtle charcoal and warm undertones emerging as light moves across the cap and barrel. Rather than relying on shell inlay or dramatic contrast, Then allows the lacquer itself to become the focal point.

This understated approach gives the pen a refined, contemplative presence. The polished black surface has the visual depth associated with layered natural lacquer, creating a finish that feels warmer and more organic than ordinary resin or painted metal. For enthusiasts who appreciate subtlety, Then offers a particularly elegant expression of ConCoPens' Vietnamese lacquer work.

Craftsmanship & Design

Then is handcrafted using traditional Vietnamese lacquer techniques over a natural wood core. Multiple layers of natural lacquer are applied, cured, and polished by hand, gradually building the depth, gloss, and surface warmth that distinguish true lacquer work from conventional production finishes.

The absence of decorative inlay makes the quality of the lacquer especially important. With no ornamentation to distract the eye, the pen depends on proportion, polish, and subtle tonal variation. This gives Then a quiet sophistication that rewards closer inspection without demanding attention.

Because the lacquering and finishing process is completed by hand, each Then fountain pen may show slight individual variation in tone, depth, and surface character. That individuality is part of the appeal of handcrafted lacquer, where the material and the artisan's process shape the final appearance of each piece.

Vietnamese Lacquer vs. Japanese Urushi

One of the most common questions surrounding ConCoPens is how Vietnamese lacquer compares to Japanese Urushi. Both are considered true Asian lacquers derived from natural tree sap and have been used for centuries to create decorative objects of exceptional beauty and durability.

Japanese Urushi is produced from the sap of the lacquer tree, Toxicodendron vernicifluum, and contains a natural compound called urushiol. Vietnamese lacquer originates from the sap of the Vietnamese lacquer tree, Toxicodendron succedaneum, and is primarily composed of a related compound known as laccol. Although chemically distinct, both lacquers undergo a similarly demanding process of repeated application, controlled curing, and hand polishing to achieve their remarkable depth and luster.

Because the trees belong to the same botanical family, individuals with known sensitivities to urushi should understand that Vietnamese lacquer cannot be considered inherently hypoallergenic. However, once fully cured, both lacquers become extraordinarily durable finishes prized for their resistance and longevity.

Vietnamese lacquer is not a simplified version of Japanese Urushi, nor is it an imitation of it. Rather, it represents its own rich artistic tradition with a particular emphasis on layered color, luminous depth, and decorative techniques such as shell inlay. The affordability of many Vietnamese lacquer pens generally reflects differences in workshop scale, labor economics, and market positioning rather than any reduction in craftsmanship or authenticity.

Writing Experience

Then is designed to function as both an artisan object and a dependable everyday writing instrument. The natural wood construction keeps the pen comfortable in hand, while the polished lacquer surface provides a smooth, warm tactile quality that feels distinct from acrylic or metal-bodied pens.

The pen is fitted with a German-made gold-plated JoWo #6 stainless steel nib, a widely respected nib platform known for consistency, smoothness, and reliability. Available in Fine and Medium widths, the JoWo #6 nib delivers controlled ink flow and dependable performance for journaling, correspondence, and everyday writing. Filling is handled by the included Schmidt piston converter, allowing the use of bottled fountain pen inks with straightforward maintenance.

Brand Heritage

ConCoPens was founded to introduce traditional Vietnamese lacquer artistry to modern fountain pen enthusiasts. By adapting techniques associated with lacquer paintings, decorative objects, and heirloom craftwork, the brand creates writing instruments that preserve Vietnam's artistic heritage while remaining practical tools for daily use.

Then reflects this philosophy in its purest form. Its appeal comes from layered natural lacquer, careful hand finishing, balanced proportions, and dependable German-made writing components rather than overt decoration. It is a refined choice for writers who appreciate subtle craftsmanship and the quiet beauty of traditional lacquer.

Mostly a Really Good Mouse
Color: Silver, Style: 1-Pack
This mouse connected perfectly, feels good, and even works seamlessly with my cordless keyboard, which of course uses a different dongle. I have only one small issue, but it's one I thought worth mentioning. While the buttons work normally when moving the cursor around the screen, when it comes to actually making a selection with the primary button (right- or left-handed, doesn't matter), one must press the button VERY deliberately and somewhat slower for the "click" to be recognized. A typical "quick click" at the speed one would normally use, say, when typing or normal "mousing" often will not register with the computer. The result is that I have to slow down and click again. In several decades of using a computer mouse I've never experienced this phenomenon. I've grown used to it, however, and adjusted to the necessity to give the selection button a slower and harder "press" when making selections, and that's all it takes. And oddly, it only requires this extra deliberate action when pressing a selection button. Not the biggest issue one could have, but I thought it worth mentioning. Other than that, no problems, and really, the price is very good, so as they say, you pays your money and you makes your choice. ;-)

Works great.
Color: Silver, Style: 1-Pack
I have to edit my review: the mouse itself is still working fine, I happened to get a bad batch of Kirkland batteries! I changed out the batteries with a different brand and the mouse is working perfectly!! Didn't last very long, have only had it 3 1/2 months and it has stopped working.
