The difference between carbon and aluminium? - Carbon produces a very light weight, high strength extension. The stiffness can be controlled by the materials used and because it has a certain amount of flex, it will not bend out of shape - the downside, this technology can be expensive. Aluminium, however, is a simple low tech solution that just employs a length of aluminium tube which, if abused, will bend out of shape but can usually be straightened. If the tube is made too thick to help reduce the risk of bending, the tube becomes too heavy to use. This extension therefore is a tradeoff between price, strength and use.
