The Platinum Classic Maki-e Kanazawa Leaf Fountain Pen - Red Mount Fuji combines traditional Japanese decorative arts with one of the nation's most enduring symbols. Finished in a rich red lacquer, this elegant writing instrument features an artistic depiction of Mount Fuji accented with genuine Kanazawa gold leaf, creating a design that is both culturally meaningful and visually refined.

For centuries, Mount Fuji has occupied a special place in Japanese art, literature, and spirituality. Revered as Japan's highest peak and recognized as a symbol of beauty, perseverance, and national identity, Fuji has inspired generations of artists and craftspeople. The use of red further enhances the design's significance, as the color has long been associated with vitality, good fortune, and celebration within Japanese culture.

Craftsmanship & Design

The Red Mount Fuji model is part of Platinum's celebrated Kanazawa Leaf collection, which showcases decorative techniques rooted in one of Japan's most famous centers of gold leaf production. Kanazawa, located in Ishikawa Prefecture, is responsible for producing the overwhelming majority of Japan's gold leaf and has cultivated these artisanal techniques for more than four centuries.

The Mount Fuji motif is created through a combination of maki-e inspired decoration and the application of delicate gold leaf accents. Against the vibrant red lacquer, the mountain and surrounding details appear luminous and dimensional, allowing the composition to evoke both the serenity and grandeur that have made Mount Fuji one of the most frequently depicted subjects in Japanese art.

The pen's slim, elegant profile complements the decorative work beautifully. Rather than overwhelming the artwork, the understated proportions allow the lacquer and gold leaf to remain the visual focus, resulting in a writing instrument that feels sophisticated and distinctly Japanese in its aesthetic sensibilities.

Writing Experience

The Platinum Classic Maki-e Kanazawa Leaf Fountain Pen - Red Mount Fuji is fitted with a smooth 14-karat gold nib that delivers the controlled precision and reliable performance for which Platinum is widely respected. The nib offers a pleasant balance of smoothness and tactile feedback, making it equally enjoyable for journaling, correspondence, and everyday writing.

The lightweight construction and comfortable proportions encourage extended writing sessions, while Platinum's proprietary Slip & Seal cap mechanism helps prevent ink from drying inside the pen. This practical innovation allows the pen to remain ready for use even after prolonged periods of inactivity, combining traditional artistry with modern functionality.

Brand Heritage

Founded in Tokyo in 1919, Platinum Pen Co. has spent more than a century refining the art of Japanese writing instruments. The company has earned a reputation for pairing technical innovation with traditional craftsmanship, producing fountain pens that honor Japan's artistic heritage while maintaining exceptional everyday usability.

The Kanazawa Leaf collection embodies this philosophy particularly well. By incorporating authentic gold leaf techniques and culturally significant motifs such as Mount Fuji, Platinum creates writing instruments that serve as both reliable tools and meaningful expressions of Japanese decorative art. For enthusiasts seeking an introduction to maki-e inspired craftsmanship and traditional Japanese symbolism, the Red Mount Fuji offers a compelling blend of artistry, history, and writing performance.

I didn't love this wig straight out of the box but after trimming the wig to frame my face and brushing out the curls (I love big hair), I absolutely fell in love with this unit. I've received so many compliments. Wig does tangle but after applying product the curl pattern returns. Will definitely purchase again!

Kitty is Innocent!
**** I will not be discussing plot points or including spoilers in this review. The Killers (1946 and 1964) is a Criterion Collection ‘double feature’ consisting of both theatrical versions of Ernest Hemingway’s short story. The 1946 film is the superior one, in my opinion. Featuring an ensemble cast including Ava Gardner and Burt Lancaster, it has all of the classic ingredients of a great noir film: • well-written screenplay • memorable femme fatale • believable, shady villains • investigating a crime • hardboiled • effective flashback scenes • plot twists and turns Director Robert Siodmak meshes these attributes to perfection in one of the greatest noirs to ever hit the silver screen. Ava Gardner as Kitty Collins is icing on the cake, as her character is one of the most iconic femme fatales in noir history. She’s so dangerous! The Criterion Collection blu ray is a must-have, with both film versions in high quality, and some very neat special features. I’m so glad that they included the 1964 film on this blu ray. Sit back, relax, and enjoy The Killers in the way they were meant to be viewed!

2 for 1!
Two iterations of an Ernest Hemingway classic short story. Burt Lancaster kicks it off with the 1946 version followed by the Lee Marvin led 1964 version. Both are great and plenty of criterion extras making this among my favorite spine in their awesome collection. There’s also a Russian student take on the short story adding a third version of a great story. Highly recommended and if it’s 50% a must buy. I already owned it and gave this as a gift who instantly called me two days later with high praise of the films.
