Artist: Thimporeni Muronga

Thimporeni was born in Angola in 1953, and came to Botswana as a refugee with her parents when she was 10 years old. She remembers Angola well, and recalls that the reason they left was because some soldiers came to their village and ordered the villagers to give them food. They had to kill a cow and pound millet for them, and the next morning when the soldiers left they decided to flee. Luckily no one had been killed, but they were very afraid. She still remembers the tasty meat they used to eat in Angola, as there they were not prevented from hunting wildlife and there was always meat to be had.

She was married, but her husband left her and she has no children. Thimporeni and one of her sisters are the sole providers in a family of six. Originally a farmer, she now weaves full-time as part of the Etsha Weavers Group.

Trips for collecting basket-making materials can take up to three days, and in the past the women did not eat for the duration of the trip because the belief was that if one touched fire or prepared food before leaving, wild animals would eat you. The journey was solemn, as full concentration was required to avoid animals and no one made jokes. Nowadays of course the women are less superstitious.

Such superstitions may have been reinforced on one such trip when Thimporeni was bitten by a crocodile.
The group had to cross a river and were in water up to their necks when all of a sudden she felt a bite on her leg and she started screaming loudly, certain that she was going to die. All the other women started to run away because they were scared, but her younger sister, Mokwahepo, didn’t flinch and started to hit the crocodile with her axe. The crocodile gave up and left, but Thimporeni was in hospital for a month recovering from her wounds. She still goes to collect palm leaves, but won’t go through water anymore!

A gifted weaver, Thimporeni specialises in weaving closed baskets, even though they take much longer to complete. She has won prizes for her larger works.

Super informative and easy to read!
Format: Kindle
Fantastic! I didn't expect a book about taxes and financial planning to be a page turner, but it certainly was. I almost dreaded starting it because this topic is such a headache, but I started and then devoured it in a single day. What I really appreciate is that it went into detail where most books about author business just give mealy mouthed generalizations, not specific to any particular country, and then warn you that their non-advice "does not constitute legal advice." Write It Off actually goes into meaningful detail about the different types of business structures in the U.S. and how to decide which is best for you. The section on deductible expenses made me realize that I've been missing an opportunity to write off a significant expense that I hadn't even considered. The section at the end with a list of helpful expense -tracking and budgeting tools was super helpful too. I received an advance review copy for free and am leaving this review voluntarily, but I would definitely recommend this to any creative with a small business. It's not just for authors!

An Essential (Unique) Resource
I have been in finance for nearly thirty years, but accounting for my hobby writing practice is still a mess. Lots of laws, and rules, and detail. Yuck – who has time? Christy’s book simplifies many of these issues, distilling them down to the essentials, and empowering writers to do much of their own financial work. It may not eliminate the need for an accounting professional, but enables and may reduce those costs (not to mention – your accountant will appreciate you being more organized). This included everything from legal structure, to accounting and taxes. The exercises are relevant and not overwhelming. Great resource for anyone with a writing practice, whether it be international bestseller or those of us building on our hobby.

Great resource for authors
Format: Kindle
The book offers a variety of helpful tips from running your own business, filing types, inventory, taxes, and more. I will be referencing it again as it has so much information that I need to look back on. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Two issues with the book: 1) Parts of the book sounded like AI. Words like crucial, labyrinth, and the extensive use of bullets left me somewhat suspicious. It’s not a huge deal as it was heavily edited but was noticeable. 2) Formatting of some parts were in all bold which was hard to read. Entire bulleted sections were all bolder instead of just the first sentence. It needed to be updated and I think this was missed. The book is helpful and a good resource despite these two issues. I appreciated the vast amount of information provided which will be beneficial in the future.
