(Also known as the Giant Polyp Sea Fan or Rough Sea Rod Coral)

Overview

The Giant Polyp Gorgonia (Plexaurella sp.) is a striking photosynthetic soft coral known for its thick, upright branches and large, extended polyps that give it a textured, bushy appearance. Colours range from tan and golden-brown to purple or reddish-brown, often with contrasting white or cream polyps. This hardy and adaptable species adds natural structure and motion to reef aquariums, making it an excellent choice for aquarists seeking an attractive, active display coral.

Origin

Native to the Caribbean Sea, Western Atlantic, and Gulf of Mexico, commonly found in shallow reef slopes and coastal lagoons exposed to moderate current and bright light. The Plexaurella genus includes several species that differ slightly in colour and branching density but share similar care requirements.

Feeding

The Giant Polyp Gorgonia is primarily photosynthetic, containing zooxanthellae that provide most of its nutritional needs through photosynthesis. However, supplemental feeding supports growth and polyp extension:

  • Phytoplankton or microplankton (2–3 times per week)
  • Marine snow or coral micro foods
  • Occasional dosing with amino acid or trace element supplements

Polyps feed passively from the water column, so direct target feeding is not necessary.

Lighting

Moderate to high lighting. Provide strong, full-spectrum light from LED, T5, or metal halide systems to support photosynthesis and vibrant coloration. PAR levels of 150–250 ¬µmol/m¬≤/s are ideal. Too little light will cause reduced polyp extension and fading.

Water Flow

Moderate to strong, indirect flow. Constant water movement helps keep the gorgonian clean and the polyps fully extended. Adequate flow prevents detritus buildup and encourages gas exchange, but avoid direct jets that could damage tissue.

Placement
  • Mount the coral vertically or at an angle in the mid to upper regions of the tank where it receives light and flow from multiple directions.
  • Allow space between colonies or other corals to prevent contact or shading.
  • Can be attached securely to rockwork with coral glue or epoxy.
Tank Mates

Peaceful and reef safe. Compatible with:

  • All reef-safe fish (gobies, blennies, tangs, clownfish, etc.)
  • Cleaner shrimp, hermit crabs, snails, and other invertebrates
  • Most corals, provided adequate spacing

Avoid:

  • Angelfish, butterflyfish, or large wrasses that may nip at polyps
  • Aggressive or stinging corals (e.g. Euphyllia, Galaxea, Hydnophora) nearby
Aggression

Peaceful. Does not sting or overgrow other corals but may release mild allelopathic compounds in overcrowded systems. Maintain space and use activated carbon or regular water changes in mixed reefs.

Experience Level

Beginner to intermediate. Hardy and adaptable, Plexaurella gorgonians are among the easier sea fans to keep. They tolerate a range of reef conditions and respond well to strong lighting and steady flow.

Water Parameters
  • Temperature: 24–27°C (75–81°F)
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
  • Hardness (dKH): 8–12
  • Calcium: 400–450 ppm
  • Nitrate: <10 ppm
  • Tank Size: Minimum 75 gallons (280L) for stability and good circulation

Maintain stable parameters and moderate nutrient levels for steady growth and rich polyp colouration.

Reef Compatibility

Fully reef safe. The Giant Polyp Gorgonia makes a spectacular centerpiece coral for mixed or soft coral reefs, providing structure, movement, and natural filtration. Its photosynthetic nature and tolerance to varied flow make it an ideal gorgonian for hobbyists seeking beauty without the feeding demands of non-photosynthetic species.

Short-lived but much enjoyed as a chew toy
Color: Consuela the Cactus - Large, Size: Large Dog
I bought two of these for my "granddogs" in the size for Large dogs. The German Shepherd-mix stole the one intended for the border collie-mix and had both toys halfway destroyed within a day--I'm pretty sure they didn't survive much longer after that. Much enjoyed! Maybe I should've bought the Extra Large size, because the Large barely fit in her mouth and she wanted to play tug-of-war, so there wasn't much for me to grab onto. Then the border collie wanted in on the action (she's older, so she needed help tugging!) but there wasn't enough material for her to grab onto without accidentally sinking her teeth into me instead.

Love all the Barkbox toys
Color: Christmas Consuela, Size: Large Dog
This is our third "Consuela"! Our dogs LOVE these toys, and they are the most durable we can find for our heavy chewers. They really like the ball inside as well. Highly, highly recommend these toys. I won't be buying other toys anymore, just barkbox.

My dog is a toy destroyer
Color: Consuela the Cactus - Large, Size: Large Dog, Color: Consuela the Cactus - Large, Size: Large Dog
I’ve had a hard time trying to find toys that my dog, Zara loves because she’s actually very picky. Ive gotten plenty of Kong toys that are well known to be indestructible but she wants nothing to do with them. Then I got her ropes and that seemed to be good for a while until she was getting sick in the middle of the night from eating all of the string. Stuffed toys aren’t good because she’ll rip them within seconds and eat all of the stuffing. I felt like I’ll never score the perfect toy for her. I found the three layered cactus toy and decided to give it a go. It’s clearly designed to be ripped and destroyed to get the ball in the middle which is actually really cute and fun to see all of the layers. The cactus arms have stuffing and of course that’s the first thing she went for and ate. I had to watch her and make sure I took the stuffing away before she ate it. And before I knew it, she ate half of the first layer fabric lol once she got through the first layer, all she’s been doing is walking around the house with the toy in her mouth. But now she’s tired and passed out on the couch from all of the fun. This toy won’t last long with a toy destroyer but it sure does give them something to do and it’s a cute toy. I do recommend!!

Last a while. Will be buying more toys soon.
Color: Consuela the Cactus - Large, Size: Large Dog
Best dog toy I have ever bought. I have three dogs, two at the time I bought this toy. It took them over a year to break through the first layer. The flower comes off first so be careful your dog doesn't swallow it. It still has the second layer so it still looks like a cactus. No stuffing to clean up when they tear into it, which makes it far less messy than other toys. One of my dogs is obsessed with fetch so I use it like a ball inside. The oval shape makes it hard to ensure when it bounces that it will bounce straight. It's bounced into walls and other stuff that I wasn't intending it to hit. Not much of a squeak so I can let them play with it for hours and I don't get annoyed with the noise. Great toy that lasts a while.
