Arts & Crafts Sterling & Carnelian "Green Man" Ring

A Green Man is an artistic rendering (often in the form of sculpture, carvings, or architectural elements) that represents a man's face surrounded by leaves. An ages-old motif, it can be found in many variations and spans across multiple cultures, often part of folklore, or as a symbol of nature and rebirth. Many designs include vines, flowers, or other foliage, and the face of the man is not always immediately evident, but almost appears to be blend into the natural elements, unnoticed until closer examination.

This beautiful carnelian ring from the Arts & Crafts era (ca1900s) is a wonderful representation of an artistic Green Man motif! The sculpted setting is crafted in sterling silver, and has a naturalistic design complete with textured leaves and fine beadwork. The shoulders of the band feature the face of the bearded Green Man, whose features are depicted in raised repousse detail. Resting at the center of the mounting is a gorgeous carnelian stone, which is polished into a smooth oval cabochon. The carnelian exhibits a rich natural orange color and slight translucent quality. Completing the design is a textured band, which is stamped with two small hallmarks on the outside, one which reads "GN." When worn, the ring makes a prominent and artistic statement piece!

Measurements: The exact ring size is difficult to determine on a mandrel due to the shape of the band, however, it would fit comfortably on a finger size 5.75 to 6. The carnelian centerpiece measures 7/8" tall and 3/4" wide. It rests approximately 1/2" above the finger when worn. The tapered band measures 3mm wide at the back.

Condition: The overall condition of the piece is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the sterling setting. The carnelian stone is securely set and free of surface chips or scratches. There is a natural patina on the surface of the silver, which is normal for antique jewelry and adds additional depth to the textured design.
