Two New Jersey sisters, earthy Rochelle Dunphy (Melissa Gilbert) and loud, crass Lorraine Popowski (Rosie O'Donnell) agree to live together for emotional and moral support while their husbands are doing time in prison for armed robbery.

One sister married a business owner and lived in the lap of luxury", while the other sister married a no-good bum. Rochelle, a trophy wife living in a palatial home in Franklin Heights, had married Roger Dunphy (Sam McMurray), a former working stiff who had become wealthy, supposedly as a successful manufacturer of sunroom and patio furniture, while Lorraine married blue-collar slob Artie Popowski (Rick Hall) in a shot-gun ceremony in Las Vegas. 

Rochelle and Lorraine are watching TV one day when a breaking news story shows two men captured red-handed in a midtown bank heist, then react with shock as they are unmasked to be Artie and Roger. Both men were sentenced to eight years in the state penitentiary, which is close to Franklin Heights, so both visit their husbands each week.

Rochelle is reluctant to find a job, after living off Roger for so long; Lorraine works at Bargain Circus, a retail store, which helps the two get by. Gloria (Rusty Schwimmer) and Sophie (Ellen Ratners) are Lorraine's co-workers. Ironically, the one time that Lorraine demanded the timid Rochelle get a job, it turnx out to backfire on her. Earlier, the manager got fired for groping Lorraine, and soon learns that the new manager is someone who impressed corporate headquarters with her self-confidence: Rochelle.

Adrienne Stone (Miriam Flynn) is the status-conscious next-door neighbor who resents everything having to do with the sisters' living arrangement. Adrienne is convinced that Lorraine is helping to bring down the value of the neighborhood, never misses an opportunity to make the imprisoned husbands a subject of conversation, and in addition, has something hypocritical to hide. Lorraine's biker friend Scab (Donald Gibb), is a rough but good-hearted guy, who she has an affair with, convincing Scab to become a kept man while getting her friends to believe he is some kind of pro athlete or sea captain.

This set contains all seven episodes produced of the short-lived sitcom based on the British TV hit `Birds of a Feather.'
