Автор воював і зараз воює. Тож в деяких описаних подіях приймав безпосередню участь. Роман частково автобіографічний. За словами Віталія Запеки: 'там де головний герой у щось 'вляпався' чи щось накоїв – то він. А якщо щось корисне та героїчне – то його товариші'.
Загалом роман досить цікаво передає дух та атмосферу початку АТО і, на подив автора, початок Великого Вторгнення. Хоча він сподівався що висміяні недоліки та 'негаразди' вже ніколи не повторяться. Роман 'Герої, херої та не дуже' не лише смішний, а й дає цікавий матеріал для осмислення.
