This is the only Damascus gut hook knife at JW Steel Crafts with a three-section bone, turquoise resin, and rosewood handle and Damascus bolster in this configuration.

The History Behind This Blade

The gut hook blade became a standard feature in American hunting knife design through the 1970s and 1980s. Field hunters needed a single blade that could open game hide cleanly without puncturing internal organs — a task a standard drop point tip could not handle with consistent precision. The gut hook on the spine solved that problem with a dedicated hook edge kept entirely separate from the main cutting edge. Three-section handle construction using bone, stone-color spacers, and hardwood became a mark of premium custom knife craft — each material chosen for grip, weight, and visual contrast. The JW Steel Crafts Damascus gut hook carries that same field-ready custom tradition in every forged blade.

Blade Performance

The blade is forged from layered Damascus steel in a raindrop pattern finish. The raindrop pattern forms during forging when the layered steel billet is pressed with a rounded die before final shaping, creating circular surface impressions across the full blade flat. The wide drop point belly gives you a long slicing surface for skinning and field prep. The gut hook sits on the spine near the tip and provides a dedicated hook edge for opening game hide cleanly without piercing internal organs. The main cutting edge and gut hook work independently — no overlap in function. Full tang construction runs through the entire three-section handle and spreads weight evenly from blade tip to handle base for stable cutting throughout extended field use.

Handle and Bolster Construction

The handle runs in three distinct sections. Cream bone scales sit at the top near the bolster. Red and turquoise resin spacer strips sit in the center, adding a clean color break between the bone and wood sections. Dark rosewood scales sit at the base of the handle. A mosaic pin secures the rosewood section and a silver pin secures the bone section. The Damascus steel bolster matches the blade pattern and sits between blade and handle, adding front-end weight for better cutting balance and protecting fingers during heavy push cuts.

Leather Belt Sheath

The leather belt sheath features dual retention straps that keep the knife secure during active outdoor movement. It protects the blade during carry and allows safe belt access during hunting and field use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes this knife different from other Damascus hunting knives at JW Steel Crafts?

This is the only Damascus gut hook knife in the store — no other listing combines a gut hook blade with a three-section bone, turquoise resin, and rosewood handle and a Damascus bolster.

What does the gut hook do?

The gut hook sits on the blade spine and opens game hide cleanly during field dressing without piercing internal organs a task the main cutting edge cannot handle with the same precision.

What is the Damascus bolster on this knife?

The bolster is forged from the same Damascus steel as the blade, giving it a matching raindrop pattern surface. It adds front-end weight for cutting balance and protects fingers during heavy push cuts.

What are the three handle sections made from?

Cream bone at the top, red and turquoise resin spacer strips in the center, and dark rosewood at the base — each material chosen for grip, visual contrast, and structural reliability.

Is the leather sheath included?

Yes. The leather belt sheath with dual retention straps is included for secure outdoor carry and field storage.

Is this knife full tang?

Yes. The tang runs the full length of the three-section handle for strength, balance, and long-term durability under heavy field use.

Chihuahua and Border Collie Approved
Flavor Name: Braided Stick (Chicken)
We got the iPaw Turkey Tendon Braided Sticks for our two senior pooches, and it’s safe to say they are an absolute hit in our household. Both of our dogs seem to genuinely love the flavor and the "chew" of these. They stayed engaged with the treat until the very last bit was gone. While they are hard, they aren't rock-hard. I was easily able to cut them up with scissors for our Chihuahua, who is missing several teeth. He was able to gum them down without any issues, which is a win for a pup with dental challenges. The only reason I’m giving these 4 stars instead of 5 is the price. They are definitely on the expensive side for the amount you get. Since my dogs go through them so quickly, it’s hard to justify keeping these as a "constant" staple in the pantry, but they make for an excellent occasional high-value treat.

Dogs loved them, but gone very quickly
Flavor Name: Braided Stick (Chicken)
I picked up these turkey tendon braided sticks as a chew treat for my dogs, and they had zero hesitation. Both dogs were immediately interested and happily worked through them without any convincing. They seem very tasty and easy for dogs to chew, which makes them a nice occasional reward. They seem to be of healthy, quality ingredients, which is always a plus. Similar to some other natural chews I’ve tried, they just don’t last very long with bigger or enthusiastic chewers. What looks like it might be a longer distraction turns into a fairly quick snack in our house. Still, the dogs enjoyed them and tolerated them well, so they work fine as a treat, just not a long lasting chew for large dogs.

Expensive for What You Get
Flavor Name: Braided Stick (Chicken), Flavor Name: Braided Stick (Chicken)
My dogs love chews and I like to try different kinds. I thought they would be longer lasting since they are braided and turkey tendon. These come in a small bag with just a few chews. The chews aren't very big either. They are chewy but not so much that they take a while to eat. I gave one to my 36 lb labradoodle and he finished it in a couple minutes - so it isn't a long-lasting treat at all. At this price point, I would expect more treats or something that lasts a while. My dog loved these but I expect more bang for my buck.

Great braided dog snacks, good ingredients - cost a bit much for the number you get
Flavor Name: Braided Stick (Chicken)
I ordered these Chicken flavored Turkey Tendon Braided Sticks for my three medium sized dogs. I had hoped these would last a little while so gave them one each (there was only like 6 in the pack), but they gobbled them down before I even realized it. They really loved them. I would love to get them these as a special treat every now and again, but they're just too expensive no longer than they last. I know that they're quality treats, made with good ingredients and that really matters, still for no more than you're getting I feel they should cost about a third less. At this rate they're about $3 a piece, and I could get more of some other treat for that price. But if you don't care about the pricing and want only the best for you dogs, then this would be a perfect choice.

Dog chew treat
Flavor Name: Braided Stick (Chicken), Flavor Name: Braided Stick (Chicken)
I recently purchased these Turkey Tendon Braided Sticks for my dog, and they have been a huge hit. Here are a few reasons why we both liked them: High Engagement: My dog was immediately interested and stayed busy with the chew. Healthy Ingredients: I appreciate that they are a Turkey Tendon Recipe, which feels like a much healthier alternative to some other chews on the market. Quality Design: The braided texture seems to help with the chewing experience and likely helps keep teeth clean. I will definitely be buying these again. If you're looking for a treat that is both enticing and made from good ingredients, I highly recommend giving these a try!
