After a recent divorce and the cancellation of his TV show, actor Josh Roberts (Mark Feuerstein) moves back to New York City to regroup. But his new home in apartment 9K comes with a unique challenge – his meddling parents live in 9J, and his ultra-successful brother, sister-in-law, and their newborn baby live in 9L. Sandwiched between his well-meaning yet overbearing family, Josh struggles to rebuild his independence while navigating their constant intrusions.
The show boasts a stellar cast, with Linda Lavin as Judy, Josh’s doting but over-the-top mother; Elliott Gould as Harry, his quirky and lovable father; David Walton as Andrew, his competitive and smug brother and his wife Eve (Liza Lapira). Matt Murray shines as Nick, the building’s friendly doorman, while Albert Tsai delivers laughs as Ian, a precocious kid who spends an unusual amount of time in the lobby.
Adding to the charm, 9JKL features an impressive lineup of guest stars, including Fred Willard, Andrea Anders, Cheri Oteri, Lois Smith, and Phil Morris.
This sadly forgotten sitcom was loosely inspired by star Mark Feuerstein’s real-life experiences while filming the series Royal Pains. The sitcom reflects his own time living alongside his family – although in reality, he shared this close-quarters adventure with his wife and 9JKL executive producer, Dana Klein.
Full of heart, humor, and just the right amount of dysfunction, 9JKL reminds us all that family might drive us crazy, but they’re also what keeps us grounded. This DVD collection is a must-have for anyone who enjoys a light-hearted look at the fine line between family support and smothering!
