The 2016 vintage marks the fifth edition of Cristal made entirely from 100% biodynamically farmed grapes, a significant evolution in Roederer’s commitment to sustainability and terroir transparency.

Weather-wise, 2016 was a challenging and surprising year in Champagne. The first half of the growing season was defined by extreme conditions—heavy spring rains, cool temperatures, and delayed flowering created pressure in the vineyards. However, the second half of the vintage saw a dramatic turnaround. From mid-July onwards, the weather stabilized, offering dry, warm days and cool nights, ideal for slow, steady ripening.

This late-season shift was critical: the Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays reached full maturity with remarkable balance between ripeness and freshness. The resulting Cristal 2016 is precise, crystalline, and vibrant, with a chalky tension and refined energy that underscore its aging potential. It’s a vintage that may not have been easy, but the reward is a wine of profound elegance and quiet power—classic Cristal through and through.
