Voortbouwend op het succes van de Pilot Road 4, laat de 5e generatie van de populaire Road-serie het voorvoegsel "Pilot" vallen en wordt meer een all-purpose benadering van een all weather sport en sport touring band. In natte omstandigheden veranderen we onze manier van rijden. Wijsheid dicteert minder agressieve hellingshoeken wanneer tractie twijfelachtig is door gladde wegen. In droge omstandigheden, nou ja, dan hebben we plezier. Het ontwerp van de Michelin Road 5-banden houdt rekening met deze complementaire rijstijlen. Het deel van de band dat het meest gebruikt wordt tijdens dag in dag uit, zelfs tijdens pittige ritten, is voorzien van diepe, waterafvoerende lamellen. De randen van de band, die alleen in actie komen tijdens agressief rijden op droog wegdek, zijn ononderbroken uitgestrekt met een zachtere rubbersamenstelling.

Het grootste verkoopargument van de Road 5 is de duurzaamheid bij nat weer. Michelin heeft in wezen het wiel opnieuw uitgevonden bij het ontwerpen van de waterafvoerkanalen van de Road 5-banden. Deze kanalen lopen uit naar het midden van de band in plaats van dat de groeven smaller worden naarmate ze dieper worden. Water moet worden afgevoerd als de band eroverheen rolt. Als een normale band slijt, wordt de negatieve ruimte tussen het loopvlak steeds kleiner. Wanneer de P5 slijt, behoudt hij een consistenter volume van negatieve ruimte waar water zich kan verspreiden. Dit betekent dat je met meer vertrouwen bochten kunt nemen in nat weer en beter kunt remmen tijdens de levensduur van de band.
