Waiting for the Rain’ is een songcyclus, geschreven voor vinyl; een tijdloos conceptalbum over opgroeien. Niet uniek in zijn thematiek maar zeer avontuurlijk in zijn vorm. Tom Bruins’ debuutalbum is alles van singer-songwriter tot barokpop en prog-rock in één.
Met mysterieuze harmoniumklanken wordt de luisteraar bij de openingstrack de songcyclus ingezogen. Het gebruik van dit instrument geeft de plaat meteen iets aantrekkelijk archaïsch.
Wie zich een beeld wil vormen wat een songcyclus nou precies is, heeft misschien het meest aan een paar pakkende voorbeelden uit de pophistorie: The Beach Boys’ SMiLE en Van Dyke Parks’ Song Cycle. Ook is de invloed van platen als Harry Nilsson’s Aerial Ballet, Genesis’ Selling England by the Pound en Randy Newman’s debuutalbum terug te horen op ‘Waiting for the Rain’. Bruins hoopt in 2025 met zijn songcyclus deze kunstvorm nieuw leven in te blazen.
